MIC and KADO event will promote public awareness of Korean knowledge database and information reference integration system The Ministry of Information and Communication (MIC) and the Korea Agency for Digital Opportunity and Promotion (KADO) will hold an event to publicize examples of the use of the Korea knowledge database. To be held May 25 to June 25, 2005, the event will also be held for the purpose of finding a new name for the Korea knowledge and information reference integration system. Changing the name of the system would make help it to seem friendlier in the popular imagination, and so promote its use. The winning entrants in the name change contest will be announced at the beginning of July, and among the prizes will be a video game and a digital camera. IT firms respond positively to PICCA The Promising Information & Communication Companies Association (PICCA) has been promoted by MIC since February as a new project to solve the IT problems faced by medium and small sized IT firms. To promote PICCA, the MIC has held more than 50 meetings with IT associations from 5 different fields such as digital contents, software, service, parts and information/communication devices. The ongoing PICCA projects launched under the aegis MIC are intended to provide support as per the following: - Resolving problems faced by each association - Aiding the joint purchase of raw or subsidiary materials and joint renting of measuring instruments - Holding briefing sessions to attract domestic and foreign capital - Providing reports on the current market situation and technical support - Mustering teams to provide on-thespot help for IT firms Besides the above, MIC is planning to complete its on-line support system (www.itsmerp.or.kr) so that interested firms will be able to obtain information about support projects run by the government at anytime. During the meetings, small-sized and medium IT firms typically requested that MIC provide assistance in training their technical staffs to avoid having a shortage of specialists. They emphasized especially that they should have sufficient information to respond to lawsuits lodged by foreign firms over the use of new technologies such as DMB and RFID. Meanwhile, MIC has positively responded to the IT firms that have joined its program through providing prompt feedback to their requests. ...... MIC Minister Chin Dae-je to support Busan in holding successful APEC summit Information and communication minister, Chin Dae-je, checked the preliminary arrangements for the APEC Leaders Meeting during a personal visit to Busan, the venue of the meeting to be held Nov. 18-19, and also attended a "ubiquitous IT city" promotional event. Also, Minister Chin detailed the promotional plan for Wireless Broadband Internet service. Operated by KT, the service will be the first of its kind in the world. "I hope that the 'ubiquitous IT city' promotional event will serve to promote Busan as a regional hub in Asia," he said, adding that MIC will provide all necessary support to ensure the successful holding of the APEC summit. ...... Digital experience attracts IT decision makers to Korea The three-day Seoul Digital Forum 2005-World ICT Summit successfully took place from May 18 to 20. It is a second time the international forum has been held following last year's event, which attracted numerous world ranking IT industry magnates as well as MIC ministers from participating countries. Ranking government officials who attended as speakers as well as foreign dignitaries included MIC minister Chin Dae-Je, Qualcomm president, Dr. Irwin Mark Jacobs, and president of Forrester Research George F. Colony. Also, many other important figures such as former FCC chairman Michael Powell, former US vice president Al Gore, and celebrated scholar John Anis attended the event. ...... Communication minister introduces Korea's experience as IT leader Information and Communication minister Chin Dae-je introduced Korea's experience as a leader in informatization with emphasis on digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) at the sixth APEC ministerial meeting on telecommunications and information industry in Lima, Peru, June 1-3. Ministers responsible for communications and information, along with key figures in the industry and academia from 21 APEC countries, were in the Peruvian capital to discuss the theme "Enabling Digital Opportunities: harnessing infrastructure to advance the Information Society." Participants adopted the Lima Declaration containing the future development direction and implementation plan and the program for action covering the APEC telecommunications and information industry on June 3.The declaration was aimed at achieving balanced development among APEC members through free, open trade and investment in information and communication. To help implement the declaration, participants pledged to strengthen information and communications infrastructure, accelerate digital opportunities through effective policies and regulations, enhance protection of information by capitalizing IT and promote information society through reinforced manpower network capabilities. ...... Public hearing held on electromagnetic wave disorder The Ministry of Information and Communication held a public hearing on electromagnetic wave disorder on May 30 as an initial step to working out measures to prevent radio waves over the next five years. Discussions took place on the situation of electromagnetic wave disorder and its impact on humans in terms of possible harmful effects in and out of the country. Civic and media organizations and experts on the theme as well as those who raised the issue attended the meeting at the Seoul Gyoyuk Munhwa Hoegwan in southern Seoul. With the use of information and communication instruments on an upsurge in recent years, malfunctioning of instruments, especially the ubiquitous availability of cell phones has prompted controversy about the harmful functions of radio waves. Based on the findings, the ministry will devise a solution to prevent electromagnetic waves and a policy aimed at easing users' concerns about it, while supporting companies for their technical development to reduce radio waves.
