The Kookmin University Automotive Engineering Research (KORA) racing team performed superbly at the Formula SAE competition held under the auspices of the U.S. Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) in Michigan, May 18-22, gaining 30th place in a field of crack teams from 140 universities. A Kookmin University team member said that universities from countries around the globe took part in the Formula SAE competition, now in its 25th year. The number of participating teams is limited strictly to 140 teams. The popularity of Formula SAE reached a new high this year since the organizers stopped accepting new applications after only two days. The competition was structured and launched to enable SAE student members to conceive, design, fabricate, and compete with small formula-style racing cars. The restrictions on the car frame and engine are limited so that the knowledge, creativity, and imagination of the students are challenged. The cars are built through a team effort over a period of about one year and then are entered in the annual competition to be judged and compared with approximately 120 other vehicles entered by colleges and universities throughout the world. The end result is a great experience for young engineers, having been given the opportunity to participate in a meaningful engineering project as well as contributing to a dedicated team effort. There were two other entrants from Korea in addition to the Kookmin University team. Yeungnam University, which has taken part in the SAE competition for 5 consecutive years and this year won 86th place, while maiden entrant Hoseo University was ranked 110th. The racing car projects of all three Korean universities were compared alongside those submitted students from foreign universities worldwide. The Kookmin University team member said that in the SAE competition, the process of assessment focused upon two main areas: static assessment and dynamic assessment. He explained that static assessment consists of technical inspection that concentrates on points such as overall vehicle safety, presentation and design. Dynamic assessment, on the other hand, is concerned with the degree of acceleration, tendency to skid, and road-holding ability. Competing for the second time in the SAE event, the Kookmin University KORA team achieved good results in every area of assessment, rising from 77th place in the 2004 event to the 30th spot this year, a jump in rankings of some 47 positions. Nam Il-jin, a master's student at the Graduate School of Automotive Engineering who took part in the SAE competition, said that he felt great pride that Kookmin University ranked first among Korean entrants second in Asia, beating off challenges from highly rated U.S universities. As to his impressions of this year's SAE competition, he said that given Kookmin University's results, he and the other team members had been inspired to making greater efforts next year in the hope of achieving an even higher ranking.
