One of the three national policy projects The Busan Newport development project is a national priority business that is being driven as one of the three national policy projects along with the Incheon International Airport as well as the Seoul-Busan Rapid Transit Railway project. As an advanced base of a maritime power, a central port in the Northeast Asia, Busan Newport is expected to serve as a mega-new port that offers clients an expanded service by handling approximately twice as many containers than the current Busan port container terminal. Busan Newport Co., Ltd. (www.pncport.com) is the entity responsible for the development of Busan Newport, is planning to complete and operate its 1-1 stage wharf facility by January 2007. Its 1-2 stage wharf facility will be completed and running by May 2009. In a special exclusive interview with The Korea IT Times, Ahn Kyung-han, Busan Newport Co., Ltd. president says on the occasion of the 10th Anniversary of the Day of the Sea on May 31 that the upcoming APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) conference in Busan in November, can serve as an excellent occasion for publicizing for the company, which plans to open Busan Newport at the beginning of 2006. The Korea IT Times met Ahn to hear about the progress of Busan Newport's construction, its competitive edge, and what it must do to seize world class port status. Q: First off, what is the importance and scale of Busan Newport A: The Busan Newport development project is a national priority project that is being driven as one of the three national policy projects along with the Incheon International Airport as well as the Seoul-Busan Rapid Transit Railway project. About 9.2 trillion won will be invested in terms of 2004 value. In terms of its scale, the Newport will have a 10km quaywall, at which 30 ships to a maximum of 50,000 tons can berth simultaneously, a container yard of approximately 2 million pyung, and the rear logistics site of 1.15 million pyung to support the harbors and bays. Compared with similar ports in Asia, Busan Newport is roughly twice that of the current Busan container terminal, 1.3 times the container capacity of Hong Kong that handles the most containers in the world, and on similar level to Singapore, a truly world-class port. Q: In order for Busan Newport to become a world port, where large vessels enter and leave freely, what will be your priorities A: In order for Busan Newport to become a maritime hub for Northeast Asia, it is important to provide clients with a variety of different services. For that reason, our company is placing top priority on the swift handling of cargo as promising loading and unloading within a definite time. As part of such efforts, we have modernized cargo handling equipment and introduced the Twin Lift as well as the Dual Cycle, and applied GPS technology that can identify a container's location automatically. Busan Newport's information system is putting Busan ahead of competing ports with such new technologies as its "Appointment" and "Booking" systems. At the same time, we will undertake a huge amount of overseas promotion to strengthen the brand of Busan Newport. Q: Then, what is the competitive edge of Busan Newport A: First, its geographic location and port infrastructure can be mentioned. Because Busan Newport is located on a major main route, which links Eurasia and Pan-Asia-Pacific, it is well placed to become a hub port. Second, it has or will have numerous advanced port facilities. When we look at current trends in container vessels, we believe that the 8,000-TEU vessel will constitute the mainstream for some time to come. Thus, as the advent of vessels from 10,000 TEU to 15,000 TEU became a reality from the end of the 1990s, Busan Newport invested in automated handling equipment as well as ensuring the harbor had a draft of 18m. Third, the port's excellent, amply experienced workforce is playing an important role in enhancing the productivity of the terminal. Plus these elements, the 1.15 million pyung rear site to support Busan Newport directly and the neighboring 32 million pyung Busan/Jinhae Free Economic Zone of will serve as a huge advantage compared with competing ports. Q: What are this year's priorities for Busan Newport A: This year will be an important year for all our executives and employees in order to prepare for the opening of the Newport at the beginning of 2006. To realize this, we will do our utmost to construct ideal facilities with thorough quality control. Plus this, Busan Newport will put its best efforts serving as a high productivity, competitive terminal equipped with an unbeatable operational information system. Moreover, Busan Newport Co., Ltd. will aim to discharge its responsibilities in the most professional manner possible by constantly checking traffic on the port's rear road and railway, as well as port security.
