Hankook Pozotech Co. Ltd is a venture company, which has made a great contribution to the materials for the floor surface industry, and Korea HPT (Heat Pipe Technology) has transformed the cooling method for electronics and electric products. Kwon Seung-An, president of these two venture companies, has directly developed new technologies, and these companies are now taking solid root based upon them.
Kwon said, "Life is filled with a series of trials, but now I am doing my best to get rid of the cracks both in my business and my life." Most people who have pulled themselves up by their own bootstraps had to overcome various kinds of difficulties, but these sufferings have opened their eyes and disciplined them. Kwon Seung-An, at fifty-three years old, looks like a rustic gentleman at first sight. But many experiences of failures in his life have made him not get easily excited or disappointed, rather, they have given him the wisdom to go through this competitive world. Many records of achieving intellectual property rights including patent rights and utility model patents, which are placed on one side of his office room, show how he has transformed those failure experiences into successes. "In time of difficulty, we usually learn many lessons, but the success fills us with delight, not leaving lessons as in time of suffering," president Kwon said. He continued to say that failure makes us sad and disheartened, but makes us with reflect on our past, thus providing us the momentum to turn around. Now he is running two companies: Hankook Pozotech and Korea HPT. Hankook Pozotech was been established in 1992, and is still a small company with a turnover of 3.5 billion won last year. But this company has grown into a solid manufacturer specializing in non-crack mortar that is essential to building the floor surfaces of apartment buildings. Following the success of Hankook Pozotech, KHPT was been established. It is now three years old, but has a promising future since it produces a high-tech product -- heat pipe, -- thus replacing imported products with a similar function. Fly Ash Leads to Success Kwon has a mania for research. At that time many construction companies were in deep trouble. The reason was that when they build apartment houses, the concrete floor surface of those apartment houses became cracked with the passage of time. Around this time, one of his friends brought him a sample of fly ash from a nearby electric power plant, and he discovered that the fly ash had the effect of strengthening concrete. From then on he began to mix cement with fly ash in a cup day and night, and continued to make more than five samples every day, devoting himself to the development of lightweight concrete. His single room in his newly wedded days was always filled with concrete test products, and too narrow to sleep in. However, after years of repeated experiments, he has at last succeeded in inventing a new product. In those days, fly ash was classified as waste scrap and as it was of no use, the domestic power plants buried it to prevent it from causing environmental problems. Accordingly, in the early days the power plants supported him financially in taking out the fly ash. But along with the increasing demand for lightweight concrete, the price of fly ash has steadily increased, so consequently he had to pay for it. After speaking of those early days, Kwon said, "At present our company recycles more than 80% of the total amount of fly ash coming from the domestic power plants and oil refinery companies." Following the successful launch of Hankook Pozotech, Kwon decided to start a second venture business. "While seeking a new item, I heard about heat pipes from a high school classmate who was doing business in the U.S.A. From then on I have tried to apply heat pipe technology to the ondol system, which is Korea's traditional heating system," he said. He started to make business trips to the U.S.A., Japan, and Russia collecting materials and receiving the advice of experts. Finally he has established KHPT (Korea Heat Pipe Technology) in July 2000. Instead of the ondol system, its application has been focused on the high value-added products such as the desktop computer and notebook computer. He went on to say, "Compared with conventional heat conduction materials, the heat pipe of KHPT has higher conductivity some several hundred times higher, so that it can be a suitable cooling material for such high-tech products as desktop and notebook computers."
Because of his firm belief that core competence is the only way to survive in this tough, competitive market, Kwon continues to put emphasis on R&D, his companies now possessing 20 kinds of intellectual property rights including a patent on the "manufacturing method for heat pipes." His company has six researchers and has also established a cooperative system with the heat conduction laboratory of the department of mechanical engineering, Sung Kyun Kwan University. Kwon added, "In addition to our excellent performance, we have remarkably simplified the production processes, thus securing its price competitiveness. Recently we have signed an MOU with a U.S. company to export US$1 million of product per year. This year we have supplied domestic notebook computer companies with 5,000 trial products, and are currently waiting for their feedback." Company Profile
