BARCELONA, SPAIN — Mobile World Congress, the world’s largest mobile phone trade show, kicked off on February 27 and will finish on March 1. Around 1,400 companies participated in this exhibition to show cutting-edge technologies and new products. The exhibition hosted by GSMA aims to celebrate the current state of mobile and offer a glimpse into where mobile might go next.

The most buzzed-about trend of the exhibition was super phone. Most mobile companies except for Samsung and Nokia showed off their quod-core products, smartphones whose mobile processor contains four cores. As core increases, the speed to process information will be faster to enable users to use various applications at the same time at fast speed. Even though they did not implement optimal performance because of heating and battery consumption problems, they were way superior to dual core. LG Electronics unveiled ‘Optimus 4X HD’, and later starters like Huawei and Fujitsu also launched quad-core products boasting about their advanced technology. The most outstanding of the exhibition was Chinese firms. The comparatively little known Chinese manufacturer ZTE has launched a veritable armada of new phones, the most noteworthy of which is the ZTE Era. The well-specified phone packs the lightning-quick Nvidia Tegra 3 quad core processor while still managing to come in at 7.8mm thick.

A bid screen was another hot issue for smart phone. LG was the first out of the gate with a competitor to Samsung’s oversized Galaxy Note, showing Optimus Vu, which has a 5-inch screen in the 4:3 format. LG said its screen will enable users to read more information at a glance as its screen ratio is the same with web documents. Samsung unveiled Galaxy note 10.1, a tablet with stylus that can be used to draw and write on the screen. “Galaxy note 10.1 is a product mixed with a book and a notebook. You can feel analog when writing on the screen,” Shin Jong-Gyeun, President of Wireless Business in Samsung Electronics. A growing number of companies are testing the waters to see if there is consumer interest for products that have larger screens. Meanwhile, Huawei decided to go with a slightly smaller screen for the Ascend D Quad and Ascend D Quad XL, which both have a 4.5-inch screen, but the resolution is still 1280 by 720 pixels.

What’s Your Idea of Tomorrow

The GSMA Mobile World Congress is the world’s largest mobile phone trade show. This annual exhibition currently takes place in Barcelona, Spain in February and will finish in March. The attendance is generally between 50,000-60,000 people, with representation from more than 200 countries across the globe. The excitement from momentum that started to return from last year surfaced for this year’s MWC, when brands like LG, Microsoft and Samsung introduced their new products. Some of the cutting-edge new gadgets are featured.

LG Electronics (LG) successfully demonstrated the world’s first voice-to-video conversion over a LTE network at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2012. The demonstration, which was based on LG’s proprietary technology, enabled users to switch back and forth between high quality voice and high resolution video call modes during an ongoing telephone conversation. Also demonstrated was a video sharing service, which enables real-time sharing of videos over a LTE network, as they are being recorded.

LG’s LTE voice-to-video conversion process adheres to the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) Profile for Conversational Video Service, the industry standard established by the GSMA to govern the delivery of both video and voice data over LTE. LG will launch LTE smartphones compliant with Conversational Video Service later this year.

“LG will continue to lead in LTE by developing and introducing innovations that consumers can actually experience and benefit from,” said Dr. Park Jong-seok President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “The LTE sector is advancing at light speed and our voice-to-video conversion technology is in the best position to be adopted industry-wide.”

At last year’s MWC, LG successfully demonstrated Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and video calls. Prior to the introduction of LTE technology, high definition video calls on smartphones were not possible, as 3G networks were unable to handle the volume of data at the speeds required for high quality video images.

Not only has LG showcased the world’s first voice-to-video conversion, but introduced its new LG Mini (LG GD880), the world`s first feature phone to support 3-way sync service.

Measuring 10.6mm in depth and weighing just 99g, the LG Mini boasts an array of superb features including LG’s 3-Way Sync service, called LG Air Sync. This next-generation mobile technology enables users to continually synchronize the data on their phones with information stored on their PCs and their browser history over a wireless network, ensuring that contents such as photos, video clips, calendars and phone books can be updated and accessed at all times. As the first feature phone to support LG Air Sync, a form of the cloud computing so far available only on smartphones, LG expects the LG Mini to generate considerable buzz on the market.

“We live in an information-oriented society with vast amounts of data and content scattered all over the place. Because of this, one of the major battles in the future mobile market is likely to be in the data management technology industry, focusing on seamless access among different devices,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “We have developed the LG Mini, which offers technological integration with its unique LG Air Sync service, in response to this trend.”

In keeping tabs on users’ personal preferences and information, the LG Air Sync works in three ways. First, through the History Sync function, the phone’s browser is updated with the 100 most recent websites users visited on their PC, allowing users to return to the exact webpage where they left off. Second, through the Personal Information Manager (PIM) Sync function, contact details and daily plans in the LG Mini can be transferred to user’s PC. Even when users lose or misplace their phone, any important data will be still accessible through their PC. Finally, with the R-Click function, pictures and information on users` PCs can be transferred instantly to the LG Mini, meaning any picture on a website can become the LG Mini`s wallpaper with just a simple click of the mouse.

The smallest and slimmest 3.2-inch full touch screen phone on the market today, the LG Mini also comes with speedy web browsing and fast push email functions for even greater user convenience. Thanks to powerful SNS features, users can easily keep in touch with friends online via social network sites such as Facebook and Twitter while also getting constant updates of what their friends are up to.

With its tiny frame, the LG Mini also boasts a 5.0 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, A-GPS, FM radio and 7.2 Mbps HDSPA. The LG Mini will be available in Europe from March, followed by other markets.

This year at a 234m² large exhibition areas at 8A147 of Hall 8 Building, SK Telecom Company will showcase some of its most advanced technologies and services that are set to drive the advance of worldwide telecommunications industry.

This is the first time the company participates in the exhibition after the acquisition of Hynix, and the spin-off of SK Planet, contents distribution platform provider. SK Telecom will take the exhibition as an opportunity to demonstrate how the above two major moves will help accelerate its growth and delivery of innovations.

During the exhibition, Hynix showcased the latest computing memory (used in desktop, notebook PCs, netbook PCs and servers as main memory) as well as mobile memory (used in mobile devices) which have already gained tremendous market success around the world. Other products include consumer and networking memory, NAND Flash Memory and CMOS Image Sensor.

For the exhibit participants who want a glimpse of the future, Hynix will present its latest, cutting-edge technological achievements with ReRAM (Resistive RAM), PCRAM (Phase Change RAM), STT-RAM (Spin Transfer Torque RAM) and TSV (Through Silicon Via) technologies.

SK Telecom has always played an active role in advancing the development of global telecommunications market. As a GSMA board member, Ha Sung Min, President and CEO of SK Telecom, will participate in board meetings to promote interoperability between operators and more innovative services for the global consumers. Also, several executives from both of SK Telecom and SK Planet will be participating in various conferences and seminars
