Ubiquitous IT design Exchange project Remarkable educational-industrial cooperation By holding 'Design Exhibition' based on social issues every three years since 1975 when the Kookmin University College of Design, was established, the College is publicizing the importance of inventiveness and the power of expression necessary for design creation for the benefit of student designers as well as the general public.
In addition to this 'Design Exhibition', the College has been holding academic events such as symposium, seminar and workshop to widen the width of understanding about the UIT industry and UIT design and to share the latest information. As a tool to address design culture, information, industry and educational policy and to be able to promote a UIT design culture movement with a new perspective in preparation for social demand, the UIT Design Education Development Institute is publishing "UIT Design Journal". The UIT design management research competition is to allow the students of the College of Economics & Business Administration or the students of the College of Design to gain an interest in the design management field and to provide momentum for knowledge accumulation. Construction of UIT design DB Kookmin University has awarded them prizes and provided them with research funds by selecting the best research paper, amounting to 12 million won. As for performance in information exchange, Kookmin University has constructed a homepage of the UIT Design Education Development Institute with a view to promoting UIT design culture and publicizing UIT design. By converting research performances constructed through the efforts of UIT design specialization, the University is making efforts also to disseminate the benefits of UIT design to the academic world and the industrial world. For that purpose, the University has constructed and opened a special UIT design homepage for the UIT Design Education Development Institute as well as for the Ubiquitous Solution Center. What's more, Kookmin University held a signing ceremony for the sake of educational- industrial cooperation with wellknown design software companies such as Alias and Opticore and has organized a field trip to the Hyundai Motor design center. Furthermore, the College of Design is promoting international exchange projects such as the UIT design talent, international development, international scholar exchange, and top foreign professor invitation programs. There is also special invitational lecture given by a foreign designer, and workshops operated in conjunction with 12 distinguished overseas designrelated universities as well as associated institutions. The Kookmin University Graduate School of Techno Design has produced 6 doctoral graduates in 2004, a first for a domestic university graduate school, which operates the sole design doctoral degree course in design within Korea. The College of Design has produced graduates who actually work in the industrial world in large numbers by establishing a curriculum that reflected industrial trends from the initial period of its foundation, and who maintain a high rate of employment, averaging 95%. As for the research performance of UIT design-associated professors, the faculty claimed 350 cases over the last three years of educational-industrial cooperation, research services, book publication, and contributions of various kinds. In the case of educational-industrial cooperation, the 41 cases undertaken garnered 800 million won. Examples of educational-industrial research projects, which consumed 41 person days, included joint research, construction of the Smart Home Industrialization Support Center, pursuit of the 'Next-generation PC application service scenario development study', and the 'GPS keeper design development project'. User-centered curriculum To bolster its specialization project, Kookmin University is exerting itself to improve the variety of its curriculum, too. Along with expanded environmentfriendly design education, exchange program operated by departments and strengthening of cooperation between the Graduate School of Techno Design and graduate design night schools, Kookmin University has constructed a UIT design education system with priority given to a new direction in UIT design on the basis of digital engineering, information engineering, computer engineering, business administration, marketing science, and recognition science. An official involved in Kookmin University's specialization-associated curriculum improvement said that the College of Design has improved continuously and operated a talent-nurturing curriculum to reflect the changes of the times by collecting data such as industrial trends as well as occupational preferences. For the sake of building an IT talent nurturing-model that is the foundation of the UIT design curriculum, Kookmin University has established IT-model computer solution courses in the College of Design. Topics include Studio Tools NC, VRML, Authoring Program, design marketing control, design process control, and design management. In that respect, the University is operating interdisciplinary education courses to foster a proactive attitude toward UIT design. The aim is to allow students to acquire knowledge of production techniques and material traits. According to the formation of its usercentered curriculum, Kookmin University has been using an assessment method via Internet from the fall semester of 2002. The University authorities said that the University can reflect the expectations and demands of education users through the lecture assessment system, which enables lectures and lecture methods to be improved. To nurture talent with practical ability that the industrial world demands, Kookmin University operates educationalindustrial internships. By means of these internships, the University believes that students can grasp information related to design field as well as on function that the industrial world needs, allowing students to judge for themselves whether they have reached a sufficient level of capability, and allows them to gain assistance for employment after their graduation by gaining knowledge of the industrial world at firsthand.
