JEJU, KOREA — Jeju Free International City Development Center (JDC) will host the ‘Asian Science Park Association (ASPA) Leaders Meeting’ at Jeju Science Park from April 23 to 25.

ASPA is an international organization that was established in 1997 to help revitalize Asian economies through cooperation among Asian high-tech science parks. Currently, it has 91 full members from 14 countries, including Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan and Australia, and 230 delegates from 9 member countries are expected to participate in the upcoming meeting.

This year, participants will discuss global leadership and cooperation among Asian science parks while determining future strategies and business directions for ASPA with the main theme ‘Future Strategies for Asian Science Parks.’

JDC plans to demonstrate the limitless potential that Jeju has as a mecca for advanced industries during the meeting. A mecca for advanced industries doesn’t mean only Jeju Science Park, which is being built on an area of 330,000 pyeong (approximately 1 million m2) in Ara-dong, Jeju, as JDC will reveal its blueprint of the future for transforming Jeju into a Technopolis.

David Fuller, Chairman of Oceania Science Park Association, and Dr. Martti Launonen, who has participated in 200 global science park projects, will attend the meeting to share best practices.

In addition, companies based in Jeju Science Park will get a chance to demonstrate their cutting-edge technologies and publicize their brands through promotional booths and networking with others during the meeting – programs planned by JDC to help them promote themselves and advance into new overseas markets.

Daum Communications, which relocated its headquarters to Jeju Science Park on April 13, IBM Korea, ON Corporation, which exports LCD TVs to the US, and representatives from Japanese high-tech industries will present new technologies and case studies with the catchphrase ‘Competitive Business in Smart Era.’ Tenants of Jeju Science Park will display their products and services at their booths. One-on-one business consultations with participants will be offered as well.

Meanwhile, JDC not only hosts the annual ASPA Leaders Meeting this year but also becomes a member of ASPA Board of Directors. The Board, comprised of directors from 13 organizations, is the highest decision-making body that determines directions of cooperation among Asian science parks, approves business plans and allocates budget.

ASPA representatives forecast that JDC’s seat on the Board would help improve Korea’s status within ASPA. Entrepreneurs working in IT and BT industries, experts from academia and representatives from related agencies can join the ASPA Leaders Meeting free of charge.
