SEOUL, KOREA – As a paradigm of the transitional methods of utilizing the Internet, people have found themselves opting for convenience with e-learning rather than conventional classrooms. With the shift from bulky personal computers to the widespread use of e-devices, people can now learn anytime and anywhere.

Bae Jung-hoon, CEO of 4CSoft

“e-Learning has a lot to do with zeal for education,” said Bae Jung-hoon, CEO of 4CSoft, a company providing advanced end-to-end e-Learning solution. “Korea is quite advanced in e-learning, but this did not occur overnight. There was persistent support from the Korean Ministry of Education, Science and Technology(MEST). In other countries, it is extremely rare for the government to back the establishment of cyber universities because of the opposition from existing colleges. It was a political issue, but the government dealt with it effectively. The refund policy backed by the government also worked. People are motivated by the opportunities to be refunded when they fully complete the course without skipping classes. This encourages many businessmen/women to take classes who are seeking promotion or changing jobs,” the CEO said. In Korea, many companies require a certain level of English proficiency for promotion or job application.

Mr. Bae went on to say that a competitive society will drive people – both students and businessmen – to keep learning and develop their skills as they strive to stay ahead of competition. In this sense, Korea has a much stronger fundamental market base than other countries. You can easily see a multitude of people engaging in online classes via their smart phones or tablets in the subway or bus. The Korean education market has long been vitalized and businesses have developed their skills regarding how to educate more effectively. With the appropriate degree of know-how, they are increasingly adoptable and flexible to meet the needs of various customers in the global market.

A pioneer in e-learning industry

Among them, 4CSoft is a pioneer in the Korean e-learning industry with 13 years of history. For the first seven years, business was not easy as e-learning was still an infant industry and not as vitalized as now. However, years of persistence seem to pay off now with the fast emergence of e-learning industry for the past few years. 4CSoft has grown into a largest e-learning company in Korea, and surpassed 10 billion won (USD 9 million) in sales last year. Its Business philosophy has also shifted as time went by. “In the beginning, we started as a software business but now I can say that our primary focus is more on education development. Instead of technology itself, we are aiming to have our own educational philosophy. The essence of education is to achieve the aim of the lesson, whether the overall goal is to improve grade or to gain knowledge,” he added.

The company has provided products for a host of universities and global companies including Samsung’s Learning Hub – education service providing 6,000 textbooks and videos from 30 education providers across the world - and SK’s T Smart Learning – a mobile platform designed to support classroom coursework, suggesting customized study schedules, and tips and learning materials that reflect each student’s academic level.

The fastest pace and lowest price

The key phrase of 4CSoft in the global market is to manufacture e-learning supplies ‘at the fastest pace and at the lowest price’ in the world. “When we go global, technology is not an issue here. Everything is online- clients, international quality certifications, and technologies. More than that, we boast of cost competitiveness and speed. We are expecting more overseas agents interested in e-learning market to send us business proposals, especially in the Western market where demands for online education are increasing in universities,” he said.

Last May, 4CSoft participated in the International Society for Technology in Education and attracted attention from many consumers and potential clients. Folens Publishers, an Ireland-based primary and post-primary educational publishing company, showed particular interest in its digital textbook platform and began business negotiations. In July of last year, 4CSoft was selected as a business partner to provide digital textbooks for the company. “We had a chance to meet a chief engineer of Folens Publishers at the Frankfurt Book Fair last October. He said that all the teachers using the digital textbooks were amazed at the convenience and functionality. The engineer was pleasantly surprised at the state of these advanced technologies.”

When asked where the competiveness came from, he cited employee benefits as a driving factor. “For a software company, employees are the most important assets because developing software comes within their minds. With low compensation and exhaustion due to excessive work, they will not be motivated to perform. I want my employees to be happy with their job. Otherwise, business will simply not work in the long term.”

“We are always thinking about end-users of products. Without having enough thought about them, there will be no quality products as a result. Developing products, embracing our philosophy and vision, 4CSoft aims to have a more positive influence on society instead of only pursuing profits.”
