RFID environment has to be transformed While the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) utilization service is expected to improve baggage processing considerably, Asiana IDT (www.asianaidt.com), which was spun off into a new company in 2003 from Asiana Airline's information and communication business unit, is poised to become a frontrunner in the aviation RFID field. RFID is a sensor technology that identifies information on a product or piece of baggage with an RFID tag and gathers information on its surrounding environment. It is widely expected that the technology will be used extensively in our daily lives in the future, from management of food, livestock, garbage and the environment to logistics, distribution and security services. Park Keun-sik, President and CEO of Asiana IDT, says that aviation will be one field in which RFID could be extensively used, adding that RFID will be utilized in aviation freight, maintenance parts management and chain management of tires, from the stage of removal from the warehouse to customer delivery. In this context, Asiana IDT is planning to put on display the RFID- Based Baggage Tracking System, X-Ray Inspection System, Baggage Handling System, Baggage Sorting Area System, Boarding Gate Reader System, and Baggage Reconciliation System at the RFID/USN Korea 2005 Exhibition which kicks off from Oct. 12 over three days in COEX, Seoul. In addition to such systems, the company is scheduled to introduce RFID Based ITS which upgraded one-notch higher by grafting RFID technology on ITS (Intelligent Transport System) and Tire Tracking and Tracing System's solution that speeds up circulation channels and stock management and manages them from a producing district to a retail store. 2-3 years needed for RFID commercialization Asiana IDT is also intensively researching and developing hardware, middleware gearing of existing systems, system integration, and readers as well as antenna technology in terms of RFID's constituent technology and sensor tag/node field, USN's constituent technology, in collaboration with the Electronics & Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI). At the same time, the company is conducting research in the Business Process Modeling (BPM) field, which can generate ROI effects by applying RFID technology directly to industry, Park commented. In the case of the RFID Reader field, Asiana IDT has had its development plan under way for over two years. As to RFID's commercialization, the president explains that it will take twothree years, pointing out that RFID is still in the nascent stage. As a stumbling block for such commercialization, Park points out that first of all, the tag price is too high for immediate commercialization. Secondly, the electronic tag has a weak point that is difficult to transmit or read through iron and water. In that respect, Dr. Jung Hong-chae, Head of the RFID R&D Center at Asiana IDT, who sat in on the interview, insists that to apply RFID in earnest, the environment has to be changed, adding that diverse companies and laboratories are launching into associated technology and product development to minimize electric wave interference by iron and water. Technological tie-up meeting with U.S. software companies Concerning the company's new product development as well as service launching plan in the years to come, Park explains that Asiana IDT is preparing aviation baggage enlargement application business that the nation can experience first and foremost, called the Mobile One-Stop Check Service which used cellular phone or RFID CARD, and RFID ITS Solution as well. First of all, Asiana IDT is planning to enlarge/apply gradually by activating RFID solutions such as logistics, tires, aviation and construction, business sphere fields of KUMHO Asiana Group. Park added that he believes that ITS field, logistics' infra field, also is a field in which RFID technology can be applied well. He further mentioned regarding overseas market pioneering as well as cooperation circumstance that whether it be technology or business, he believes that cooperative relationships are important since the RFID/USN field's significance lies in system integration which is geared to the Global Network. President Park notes that the company already began technological tie-up meetings with U.S. software companies, ROOT DNS service firms, a superior position level of middleware and that they are considering business relations with these companies. Win-win on the basis of good RFID/USN technology infrastructure With regard to the outlook for realizing a logistics center of Northeast Asia, Park said that Asiana IDT is preparing a development plan to construct a logistics system for the Korean Integrated Freight Terminal Co., Ltd. (KIFT), an affiliate of KUMHO Asiana Group, with the RFID System. He added that he sees it as a system which has to be constructed by all means in order for the company to be competitive in terms of logistics costs, transaction time and service quality. Provided this takes root as it should and is utilized, he said he believes that Asiana IDT would contribute to the improvement of logistics costs and service competitiveness, areas where Korea is lagging behind neighboring countries. He went on to explain that Korea is also a country relatively well-equipped with infrastructure in the RFID/USN technology field. As examples of such excellent infrastructure, the president named Samsung Semiconductor's chip production competitiveness, LG Chemical's Battery technology power and telecommunication technology as well as Internet infrastructure based on CDMA. However, considering the problems faced in reducing the price tags to under 10 cent, the delivery condition of goods to the Department of Defense (DOD) or Wal- Mart, and Dense Gen2 Reader's technological improvement speed etc., he expects that private enterprise initiative will open the market gradually within one or two years.
