RFID/USN is being intensively illuminated as the core technology to realize Ubiquitous age. Since RFID/USN contains infinite social/economic potential power and is touted as a huge Blue Ocean which cannot easily predict its utilization field and industry scale in the years to come, global companies' competition to dominate this RFID/USN market, begins in earnest. Director-general Hyung Tae-gun, Information & Communications Policy Bureau, MIC, emphasizes that the Ministry of Information & Communication is diffusing it in a national dimension to nurture as a new growth engine intensively, explaining that RFID/USN is the core infra industry to become another industry's groundwork. The Director-general says that MIC is propelling a policy which considered industry's value chain entire fields such as demand activation like pivotal project's propulsion, technology development as well as commercialization, standardization of chip/tag etc., law/institutional groundwork like individual information protection, considering that all subjects have to connected organically in terms of RFID/USN industry's character. Mr. Hyung explained that MIC has an ambitious plan under way and the Ministry will create South Asia's IT hub by forming a Ubiquitous IT cluster in which global companies related to RFID/USN as well as innovation-model domestic enterprises are accumulated. In order for RFID/USN to take root as a new growth engine industry, however, he said that there are many tasks, which have to be solved such as core technology power security, early mass diffusion, and information protection. Providing the academic world, laboratorial circles, industrial circles, and the government devote joint efforts to its activation based on the highest level's IT infra in the world and successful informatization propulsion experiences, Hyung said that he believes Korea could lead the world in this field sooner or later. Hyung pointed out that key budget projects related to RFID/USN in this year's RFID/USN-associated key budget were 35.75 billion won (approx. US$34.91 million) higher by about threefold compared with the previous year's budget of 12.02 billion won (approx. US$9.98 million). Detailed stimulatory projects of this year include UHF RF-ID as well as Ubiquitous networking technology development, information protection technology development for RFID/USN, core infra structure technology development for the sake of RFID introduction, RFID/USN standard development, nextgeneration RFID/USN technology R&D and so forth. In addition, MIC is propelling RFID pilot projects in 12 fields such as procurement commodities and national defense ammunition from 2004 through 2005 and is planning to drive forward the USN pilot project as from 2006.
