Police will make every effort to ensure security and public order for the upcoming summit of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), the nation's police chief said. The nation's police, intelligence agency and all security-related authorities are giving last minute checks for the summit slated for Nov. 12-19 at the southeastern port city of Pusan (Busan). "Until the summit day, we will concentrate on keeping public order and security with all our might, so that the nation can host APEC successfully," said Huh Joon-young, commissioner general of the Korean National Police Agency. "Ahead of APEC, a series of terrorist attacks occurred around the world targeting anyone, anywhere. We are trying to make sure that the nation will hold the summit without any troubles," he said at a press briefing at the headquarters of the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency. Huh also said police will sternly deal with illegal or violent antiglobalization demonstrations according to the law and principle, asking the people's cooperation in holding APEC as a peaceful and wellorganized festival. Local police also designated the areas within 1.5-kilometer radius of the meeting venues and hotels as special security zones. "The designation aims to secure perfect security by removing dangerous factors from certain areas in advance," Huh said. Huh also sought an understanding with Pusan citizens about inconvenience resulted from police's security checks and traffic control. Police and other authorities have been on high alert for possible terrorist attacks and any disturbance during the APEC summit, with about 4,600 police officers and other agents placed at major facilities. Police officers and riot police across the country were ordered to suspend their holidays from Monday until the summit ends. Patrol boats of the navy, armed with high-tech equipment, keep guard at sea around the Nurimaru APEC House, the summit venue of 21 Asia- Pacific leaders. Fishing boats are banned from sailing within a 7- kilometer radius of the house. At Gimhae (Kimhae) International Airport, passengers and their family members visiting the airport to see them off, have to undergo extensive security checks. Security areas at the airport have become more restricted, as authorities are using fingerprint identification now.
