Display research and display conferences targeted as key business Let's prepare for the age of Display Renaissance!" So says Displaybank CEO Peter Kwon, who held the KDC (Korea Display Conference) 2005 over Nov. 3~4, 2005 at COEX, Seoul. He proposes that first of all firms need to secure economy of scale for the purpose of reducing costs. He advised that associated companies should upscale and construct effective clusters.
Second, to prepare for the era of Display Renaissance, the CEO proposes that relevant companies secure new technology, new material, and core technology, taking aim at penetration stage followed by the growth stage over the next 10 years. In an interview with the Korea IT Times on the occasion of KDC 2005, Kwon predicted that display would be the future hub of culture, adding that display would eventually be used everywhere, including public displays, furniture displays and cellular phones. Display market size is anticipated to grow from US$276 bil. in 2005 to US$329.2 bil. in 2010. Therefore, in an effort to dominate this market, there is keen competition among advanced technology countries. Intense competition among these nations is proven by the fact that Korea, Japan, China and Taiwan, which form display clusters, are spurring the display industry with their national next-generation new growth engine projects, as well as their envisaged future projects. In the case of Korea, which has secured the No. 1 market share in CRT, LCD, and PDP, this country is rapidly developing AMOLED and is driving forward parts/material/equipment localization. Japan is also brisk in terms of its efforts to make further inroads into China and Taiwan through technology tie-ups under the catchphrase of the "Future Vision Project'. Japan is eager to strengthen part/material/equipment technology control and places emphasis on nextgeneration display development, such as SED and e-Paper. Concerning the display industry's features, Kwon explains that it is basically an installation industry which needs largesized investment scale and a panel company initiative-model industry, as well as needing high penetration of core technology barriers. First tier companies' market share, such as Samsung, is growing rapidly and their leading and dominant power is strengthening year by year, Kwon added. Furthermore, he explained that the market needs more (high-end) mobile display, as the competitiveness of each device has been enhanced, and the entry of more OLED & SED (FED) is expected. Northeast Asia, on the one hand, operates display clusters, so to speak, as Centers of Production, Centers of Distribution, Centers of Tech Development, Centers of Capital Investment, and Centers of Human Resources. Clusters in Korea include Paju and Gyeonggi Province, Chonan and Tangjung, Gumi and Yangsan. Taiwan's clusters also are composed of Taichung and Yunlin, Taoyuan and Hsinchu, Tainan and Kaohsiung. Growing China consists of Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Guangdong. As its main business is as a research firm, Displaybank has adopted display research and display conferences as the company's key profit models. At the same time, because the company is strong on the Web, Display is recognized by producing a variety of reports by means of marketing through Web sites . Displaybank's reports encompass large area TFT-LCD panels to TV, PDP, OLED, small and medium display, component materials and equipment, the Korean market and overall markets. CEO Kwon, who came from Samsung SDI, says that Displaybank is ironically now even more famous abroad than at home.
