Securing maximum benefit from the 2005 APEC Summit taking place from Nov. 12 to19, the Busan IT Industry Promotion Agency (www.busanit. or.kr) is actively supporting Busan-based IT companies efforts to advance further into foreign markets. This is being done through introducing the high potential of these IT enterprises to CEOs of global companies, according to a top manager of the agency.
In an interview with the Korea IT Times, Kim Kyu-chul, president of the Busan IT Industry Promotion Agency, said, "On a long-term basis, we will attract global-level IT enterprises and research centers to Busan, the nation's biggest port city." In particular, he said, the agency will link the "Ubiquitous Busan City (U-City) Project" with the APEC Summit to signal the high technology level of Busan-based IT companies to the world's leaders. Busan is pushing ahead with the U-City Project over the next five years, which is aimed at applying the next-generation ubiquitous technology to the city's major infrastructure - including harbors, transportation, tourism and conventions - for improving the region's industrial structure and activation of the regional economy. "Among the U-City Projects, particularly, we will make a strong push for the U-Port Project, which is designed to build a ubiquitous port based on RFID consisting of a container location chasing system, a harbor terminal real-time monitoring system, and an advanced information exchange system," said the top manager of the agency. Noting that the IT exhibition will be held at BEXCO in Busan during the 2005 APEC Summit period, Kim said that Korea will introduce its state-of-the-art IT technology and the government's IT839 future-oriented information & communication policies to political and business leaders of APEC member countries during this time. The spectacular IT exhibition pavilion, featuring the innovative future lifestyle of "Ubiquitous Korea," will be comprised of eight halls with specific subjects, including U-port Hall, E-learning Hall, Ehealth Hall, Robot Hall, Culture Contents Hall, Electronic Trade Hall, and E-Government Hall. "Though the exhibition, we plan to herald the IT technology level of Korea to foreign countries, as well as showing what the future society will look like, based on IT technology," he said. The Busan IT Industry Promotion Agency was established in June 1997 to actively support and promote the IT and culture contents industries in Busan. At present, the agency extends technological, managerial and financial support to about 1,000 IT companies in Busan, while helping them advance into foreign markets. For their exploration of foreign markets, the agency is expanding its overseas networks by concluding memorandums of understanding (MOUs) with a number of international organizations and overseas IT-related institutions. The Busan IT Industry Promotion Agency has already signed MOUs with ITrelated state-run or private institutions in China, Japan, Australia and the Philippines. At the same time, the agency held meetings with its counterparts in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, and Myanmar to promote bilateral cooperation in the IT business. "On the occasion of the 2005 APEC Summit, we plan to expand bilateral exchanges with other APEC countries in the IT sector. Through these efforts, we can explore new overseas markets, develop future-oriented business models, and push for joint projects with foreign business partners," said Kim. "We already reached an agreement with APCRC of Australia, a world-famous optical IT research center, to build a joint research center in Busan. During the APEC Summit period, we plan to have an official ceremony for the opening of the research center," he said. "Besides," he continued, "We received many offers from a number of foreign ITrelated institutions to exchange IT-related information and manpower, as well as to launch joint projects." In September 2005, the agency also opened the Busan Global IT Educational Center and Busan Game Academy to help Busan-based IT venture companies secure technological competitiveness and actively foster experts in a systematic way. The agency also helps provide ITspecialized equipment to Busan-based IT companies through the Busan Multimedia Support Center, the Busan Software Support Center and the Busan Information & Communication Research Center. Kim concluded on a determined and optimistic note, saying, "We will exert our utmost efforts to ensure that Busan secures an important slice of the lucrative global IT market utilizing our advanced IT infrastructure and about 1,000 competitive IT companies based in Busan."
