Daesung focuses on environmentally-friendly alternative energy security As a specialized company in the energy sector, Daesung Group is striving to become one of the world's top alternative energy companies through specialization and rationalization, according to a top manager of the group. "As energy and environmental problems have become major issues to be resolved these days, I am determined to make Daesung Group one of the world's top companies in terms of the energy and environmental sectors," Kim Younghoon, chairman of the group, said.
Noting that development of alternative energy is the best way to solve both energy and environmental problems simultaneously, Chairman Kim said, "Daesung will continue to develop alternative energy and actively advance into overseas markets to become a company responsible for energy security in Korea." Commenting that the level of environmental pollution has reached at a serious level, he said that Daesung Group will lead a campaign to protect and be responsible for the environment, while striving to improve the social environment and develop the cultural industry. Asked about the firm's management philosophy and mid- and long-term vision, Kim said, "We have placed the emphasis on specialization, rationalization and globalization of the management. At the same time, we will aim to make Daesung Group a top-tier company in the world in terms of specialty, public interests and profitability." Saying that energy security is a very important issue for Korea, with its limited energy resources, Kim said, "We will strive to make Daesung Group a specialized company focusing on energy security and protection of environment." "In keeping with the era of globalization, I will make a strong push for CEM management, which means creating economy of mobility," he stressed. On its mid- and long-term vision, he said that Daesung Group will foster the energy, financing and information & communication sectors as the three core businesses following the mottos of "focus on the soft," "make it smart," and "globalize swiftly." Also, Daesung Group will actively foster the environment, distribution and construction sectors as the three main forces of the group, while developing the movie, education and media sectors as the key three strategic businesses. "In a nutshell, we will push ahead with the 'Ten Ten Ten Plan," under which Daesung Group aims at achieving more than 10 trillion won in total sales and $1 billion in net profits in 2010," he said. Asked about why the group was recently picked as a priority negotiator to take over the portal site, Korea Dot Com, Kim said that the energy-specialized Daesung Group has selected its next-generation growth engine as the culture industry. "Through the group's subsidiaries, including BiNEXT HITECH Co. and Daesung Dot Com Co., we have been actively engaged in the culture business through investment in movies, dramas, publications, events and games. Through the takeover of Korea Dot Com, we plan to enhance our image as a global culture enterprise and seek synergy effects through its linkage with existing businesses," said Kim. Noting that Korea Dot Com has failed to gain the recognition it deserves compared with the favorable image its domain has, Kim said, "We will make the company a top-tier portal site by making use of the brand power to the maximum and offering new services and contents." Related to this, Daesung Group concluded a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Park Road Post of New Zealand, a company that produced the movie, "Lord of the Rings," early this year, he said. "The two companies will establish a joint venture and invest 30 billion won in movies, TV series and games to be manufactured in South Korea and New Zealand," he said. Daesung Group, while focusing on the energy and culture sectors, is operating 15 subsidiaries, including Daesung Institute for Clean Energy, Daegu City Gas, Kyongbuk City Gas, Seoul Energy Environment, and Daegu Energy Environment.
