Amotech (www.amotech.co.kr) is a Korea-based company engaged in the manufacturing of new materials for the information and communications, IT and electronic appliances industries. As such, the lineup of Amotech’s key products consists of chip varistors (which protect semiconductor elements against over voltage), a variety of antennas (e.g. GPS antennas, Bluetooth, FM antennas and laptop antennas) and smart motors which are more efficient and quieter than existing motors.

Amotech’s chip varistors, which went into production in 1999, took the global chip varistor market by storm that had been dominated by developed nations like the US, Germany and Japan. As 15 to 30 chip varistors are generally inserted into a mobile phone, the smaller the better. Amotech’s chip varistors, which come in smaller sizes but are capable of absorbing more static electricity, were propelled into the spotlight as the company overtook Japan’s TDK to become the world’s No. 1 chip varistor purveyor in 2004. Since then, Amotech has emerged as the world’s No. 1 manufacturer taking up 30% of the global chip varistor market in sales.

Furthermore, Amotech lunged into the global smart motor market in 2011 aiming to come out on top in the global high-efficiency motor market. As of now, Amotech’s smart motors are Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) motors for washing machines, which are currently supplied to Whirlpool Corporation in the US, Haier Group in China, Daewoo Electronics, etc.

Motors for washing machines are turning “smart” around the world. If a fully automatic washing machine is equipped with a smart motor, its energy efficiency increases as much as 35%. And front-loading “drum” washing machines powered by smart motors becomes much quieter. This is why Whirlpool in Germany uses an advertising tag line of “Powered by Smart Motors” when it put its washing machines on display in stores.

Vehicles Also Run on Smart Motors

Amotech’s long-term goal is to take on the gasoline-powered vehicles segment of the global smart motor market. Amotech CEO Kim Pyung-Kyu said, “We have already secured 10 relevant patents through joint R&D projects with Hyundai Motor Company. At the moment, Amotech’s smart motors enjoy a monopoly on the Korean hybrid vehicle market, so we expect Amotech‘s smart motors will soon be applied to gasoline-powered vehicles.

On the other hand, thanks to the use of new materials, Amotech’s antennas for mobile gadgets boast smaller sizes than their competitors. Amotech’s antennas for mobile gadgets, which have been slotted into laptop computers produced by HP and Dell are scheduled to be supplied to the global antenna market for smartphones and table PCs in the near future.
