Telematics transcending such spaces, creating ubiquitous convergence
In the initial stage of telematics, its services were confined to emergency rescue, traffic information, driving guidance and offering of supporting information for drivers.
However, it has since developed into a mobile office service, which enables users to utilize services at office, at home, or in a moving car, without service interruption. Through telematics, people will eventually be able to realize a mobile digital lifestyle and experience a ubiquitous society by grafting it on various communication and broadcasting services. In parallel with the paradigm change of the times such as the emergence of ubiquitous technology and convergence, telematics is also introducing a new conception through convergence of related technology and services.
Accordingly, the telematics industry will develop into the industry converging or combining IT 839, such as DMB, WiBro, home network, and RFID/USN. Based on wireless networks such as WiBro (Wireless Broadband Internet) and HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access), telematics will smoothly provide car drivers with mass storage multimedia services such as movies, music and game, offering mobile office environment, where customers can make high-quality entertainment and groupware-based electronics settlement and electronics payments.
It will also strengthen the dynamic navigation function by converging terrestrial/satellite DMB and dual DMB and offering real time traffic information through data channel of DMB. By grafting RFID/USN technology on the future-oriented automobile technology, telematics will provide state-of-the-art car safety driving service.
Among the advanced vehicle services for safe driving are prevention of collisions at crossroads, offering of information on road conditions, warning against dozing off while driving, maintenance of road lanes, and warning against risk situations. Home networks for telematics services transcending such spaces as vehicle, home and office can be merged or linked with embedded SW.
At the same time, tailor-made information services, including traffic information considering traffic jams and road conditions, guidance on parking lots, and real time information about safety and emergency situations, can be offered. By applying voice recognition, voice synthesis, next-generation display and wireless equipment control technologies, it will also guarantee convenience and safety of driving.
For drivers and passengers who are moving at a high speed, real interfaces for vehicle safety will be continuously developed. And ergonomics interface technology such as signals from a person's body will be developed in the near future. Acquiring exact location information is a decisive factor for service quality. Accordingly, relevant companies are developing a system to offer exact location information by combining various determination technologies.
In the near future, people are expected to receive telematics services at any time, anywhere, and through any device and any network.
When telematics services becomes fully available, a car will be the third digital life space, enabling drivers to access information services at office, home or traveling spot without interruption. A vehicle will be changed from a driver-oriented space to a space for all passengers as they can engage in financial services, leisure, shopping and entertainment activities.
Car drivers can enjoy safer and more convenient driving through telematics, which offers such functions to prevent sleepiness, collision and crossing of traffic lanes.
A telematics vehicle will be developed into a connected car where information flows freely and a core space of the ubiquitous society, making our life safer and more convenient.
The telematics industry consists of the equipment industry and the service industry.
Meanwhile, the equipment industry comprises of manufacturers of finished cards and parts, electronics and communication companies.
The service industry includes tailormade service providers, communication, insurance, financial and security sectors.
