Hundreds of South Koreans held a ceremony on Dec. 28, 2005 in North Korea with the North's officials to mark the opening of the first direct commercial phone links between the two divided Korean states.
The phone connection between the North's border city of Gaesong and South Korea marks another step forward in relations between the two Korean states which are still technically at war, with no peace treaty singed at the end of the 1950-53 Korean War. The opening of the first direct commercial phone links between Gaesong and South Korea appears to serve as an important turning point for the IT collaboration between North and South Korea. Through his congratulating remarks, Mininister Chin Dae-je, MIC (Ministry of Information & Communication) said: "Sufficient consultation is necessary to enlarge exchange cooperation about IT field at large with North Korea such as Internet service offering etc. following Gaesong industrial complex's direct telephone as well as FAX opening", proposing that Let's discuss all matters in depth by meeting frequently with each other between North and South Korea.
