Samsung Elect. wins most design and engineering innovation awards at CES 2006 In keeping with its reputation as one of the world's leading manufacturers of electronics goods, Samsung Electronics became the recipient of 15 International CES Innovations of Design and Engineering Awards for this year's International Consumer Electronics Show (CES).
Prior to the international exhibition to be held in Las Vegas in the United States on January 5-8, Samsung Electronics, which won 11 innovation awards in the previous event, announced that it has not only won the innovations awards but was also named the Best of Innovations Honorees in three product categories: the four door convertible refrigerator "Quatro" in the category of 'home appliances', the YM-P1 Portable Multimedia Player in the category of 'portable audio', and SCHi730, the handheld device accessible to the Internet through the wireless Wi-Fi, in the category of mobile communications. The CES Innovations Awards are granted to products among the more than 1,000 entries for the exhibition that earn the highest honors in terms of technology and design from an independent panel of journalists, designers and engineers. In the category of home appliances, Samsung displayed the world's first four door convertible refrigerator "Quatro." It provides consumers with four separate compartments each controlled and cooled separately by individual cooling systems/evaporators. This technology provides flexibility in food management, and saves energy. Samsung's other Best of Innovations Honorees is YM-P1 Portable Multimedia Player, the world's first pocketsize satellite TV reception enabled player with a 4 inch TFT-LCD screen. The portable player's 20GB drive can also store and play music and video. It has a simple design by detaching accessories. Samsung's smart phone 'SCH-i730', in the meantime, won an accolade that blends both portability and usability in a compact yet feature-rich package with a hidden full QWERTY keyboard and a wide screen. It also provides user-friendly operating environment since the product is compatible with Windows operating systems for mobile devices. In addition to these, Samsung's lineup of products and technologies that have won the innovations awards include Pocket Imager, a portable projector that can project pictures on a screen as wide as 60 inches, three digital camcorders including a sports camcorder with an additional external cam operable wireless, the world's smallest multi-function laser printer, two LCD TV models including the world's largest 82-inch LCD TV, two mobile phones including high-tech Bluetooth camcorder phone, a stylish home theater, as well as a wide range of products including XM support MP3 players, and XHT technologies that can easily operate interconnected digital video and audio devices. Choi Ji-sung, president of Samsung Electronics Digital Media, said, "The fact that Samsung has swept 15 CES Innovations Awards means that we stand at the top of the world in terms of technology and design. In 2006, too, Samsung Electronics will take up a leading role in innovating digital home appliances and IT products."
