Cover Story / WCDMA - HSDPA Expansion of convergence business products is in the cards for SKT SK Telecom has been pulling out all the stops in building its "Global Value Network" as part of its globalization strategy for 2006. To become a world leader, SK Telecom has set three globalization strategies this year, Kim Shin-bae, CEO of the nation's foremost mobile phone operator, said.
Firstly, SK Telecom will secure bargaining power and pursue operation efficiency by connecting overseas offshoots of the company and building a global value network, he said. It will also add convergence BM and build various Biz portfolios to realize value maximization, the top manager said. Secondly, SK Telecom will push for selection and concentration by advancing into foreign markets with high growth potential, including the Asian market, and seeking chances to maximize synergy effects. Thirdly, it will bolster competitiveness in local markets by making the best use of its successful core resources and power proved in the domestic market and closely cooperating with local partners. CEO Kim also introduced the 2006 strategic directions of SK Telecom. In 2006, SK Telecom will further develop wireless Internet service, persistently develop customer-oriented services and products and make best efforts to become a world leader by expanding the global business whose foundation was prepared in 2005. Expanding global business It will develop the data business further, which has seen a rapid growth compared with the sluggish voice market, and strengthen its business portfolio, said Kim. To that effect, SK Telecom will activate development of strategic products, increase customers' convenience and bolster profit-based data business this year. At the same time, it will actively seek expansion of the convergence business and develop products and services that will lead the convergence market, he said. Through the development of customeroriented products and services, it will create SK Telecom's differential factors and increase sales and profitability. To help its MVNO project in the United States and the "S phone" project in Vietnam establish growth foundation this year, it will expand global business through exploration of the new market and strengthening of system management. WCDMA and HSDPA opening new opportunities In 2006, SK Telecom plans to offer various products through its Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) and High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) and promote data quality, as well as improve customer value. Through the introduction of HSDPA that enables high-speed wideband data service, SK Telecom plans to offer the download (network --> terminal) speed of 1.8Mbps and the upload speed (terminal --> network) of 384Kbps in 2006. In 2007, it plans to jack up the speed to 7.2Mbps for download and 2Mbps for upload. SK Telecom earlier planned to activate the world's HSDPA market along with NTT DoCoMo of Japan. SK Telecom already introduced the service using HSDPA at the "APEC 2005 Korea" exhibition for the first time in Korea. HSDPA is a new mobile telephony protocol and is sometimes referred to as a 3.5G technology. In this respect it extends WCDMA in the same way that EV-DO extends CDMA2000. HSDPA provides a smooth evolutionary path for Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) networks to higher data rates and higher capacities. It is an evolution of the WCDMA standard, designed to increase the available data rate by a factor of 5 or more. HSDPA defines a new WCDMA channel, the high-speed downlink shared channel (HS-DSCH) that operates in a different way from existing WCDMA channels, but is only used for downlink communication to the mobile. SK Telecom plans to invest 570 billion won ($582 million) in building HSDPA networks in 23 cities, including Seoul and Busan. It also started the commercial service of WiBro in Seoul in June 2006. It plans to expand the area available for the WiBro service to 84 regions in 2009. SK Telecom has been pushing ahead with activating the WiBro market and offering differentiated services.
