Domestic Firms' Business Scene Setting new standards as representative convergence service Telematics is a service that offers a public security service, driving support services such as road guidance as well as traffic information, and entertainment service by applying wireless communication technology, GPS technology, and car control technology. Particularly, Korea's telematics industry is being assessed as one model the world watches since in the case of home, communication infrastructure of the highest level globally was constructed and the auto industry also is on a par with that of advanced vehicle telematics countries. After having created a telematics aftermarket which supplies by equipping cellular phone and kit to the already sold vehicles separately since several years, telematics business circles have been starting a full-scale competition from 2005 following its before market pioneering that provides as a form of option before a vehicle launching in 2004. Such telematics business is a strategy for a standpoint of mobile communication business provider to enlarge the established voice communication-oriented mobile communication-network business to wireless data communication. SK Telecom made inroads into the telematics market in earnest by launching Nate Drive in March 2002. The company has secured the largest subscribers globally following America's GM Onstar by securing around 220,000 subscribers by 2004 and marketed telematics product for before market since Sep. 2003 in concert with Renault Samsung Motor. Nate Drive enables detailed direction guidance in complicated road networks by adding a full map function that offers map indication in a crossroads. SK Telecom plans to concentrate the company's efforts on market enlargement in concert with participating companies, judging current telematics market as a fledged circumstance. In tandem with the government's policy which wishes to nurture telematics business as one of IT new growth engine items, the company is scheduled to direct many resources to telematics infrastructure construction such as traffic information and open-model standard platform construction etc., an official responsible for telematics business at SK Telecom said. KTF plans to prepare the company's success foundation in its telematics business by constructing diverse collaboration business models between business circles. KTF's major collaboration partners are car manufacturers like Ssangyong Motor Company, telematics terminal business provider, and major SI business providers. This company held its joint demonstration ceremony with SsangYong Motor Company at the Busan ITU exhibition in Sept. 2004, showcasing telematics brand for the telematics before market, called "Ever-way". KTF is upgrading text-based service to multimedia graphic environment by offering EV-DO network-based telematics service. From June 2004, KTF began to offer 'K-Ways' service for after market, which is being designed conveniently customer-friendly. LG Telecom is offering 'ez Drive' service for after market, which provides users with all kinds of beneficial information such as automatic road guidance, road hazard information and tasty house. With 'MOZEN' brand in collaboration with Hyundai/Kia Motor Company, LG Telecom made inroads into before market telematics market for the first time at home on Nov. 2003. MOZEN offers information such as security driving, road guidance, emergent rescue, & entertainment by being applied to chief middle & large-sized auto of Hyundai/ Kia Motor Company and RV vehicles. LG Telecom's executives responsible for telematics business say that the company is planning to offer a one dimension higher service by applying terrestrial wave as well as satellite DMB to telematics in the coming months.
