SEOUL, KOREA – Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) announced on December 26 that it has received an order for two 3,000-ton submarines worth 1,682 billion won from the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA)The project, called Jangbogo-III, is to have domestic shipyards to build next-generation submarines for the Korean Navy. The existing submarines, run by the Korean Navy, were built based on Germany’s HDW.
To promote the localization of submarines, the DAPA has engaged in design research in collaboration with Korea’s major shipyards over the past four years.
Under terms of the contract, DSME will deliver the two 3,000-ton submarines by 2022. Starting with the receipt of an order for a 1,200-ton submarine Jangbogo in 1987, DSME has thus far received orders for nine 1,200-ton and three 1,800-ton submarines from the DAPA.
Including the latest order, DSME has obtained orders worth US$14.2 billion so far this year, exceeding its order receipt target for this year, set at $11 billion, by 30 percent.

대우조선, 해군 차세대 잠수함 2척 수주
대우조선해양은 방위사업청으로부터 3000ｔ급 잠수함 2척을 1조6829억원에 수주했다고 26일 발표했다.
‘장보고-Ⅲ’로 알려진 이 프로젝트는 해군이 운용할 차세대 잠수함을 국내 업체가 개발해 건조하는 사업이다. 기존 해군의 잠수함은 독일 하데베의 기술을 바탕으로 건조했다. 방사청은 잠수함 건조 실적이 있는 국내 조선사들과 기본 설계 연구를 추진하는 등 지난 4년간 국산화에 힘써왔다. 3000ｔ급 두 척은 2022년 말까지 모두 인도한다. 대우조선해양 관계자는 “국내 잠수함 관련 전문 기관들과 긴밀히 협력해 3000ｔ급 잠수함 건조를 차질 없이 끝낼 것”이라고 말했다.
대우조선해양은 1987년 1200ｔ급 잠수함 장보고호를 시작으로 지금까지 1200ｔ급 9척과 1800ｔ급 3척을 방사청으로부터 수주했다. 지난해 12월 인도네시아 국방부로부터 1400ｔ급 잠수함 3척을 따내 국내 업체로는 첫 수출 기록을 세웠다.
