Tizen is an operating system developed jointly by Samsung Electronics and Intel of the United States. Unlike Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS, Tizen is based on an open source OS Linux. Accordingly, telecom companies like NTT DoCoMo can offer independent services.
According to a U.S. market research firm Gartner, Android grabs a share of 72.4 percent in the world’s smartphone OS market in the July-September period of this year, followed by iOS with 13.9 percent.

삼성전자 타이젠폰, 내년 일본 등지서 출시
일본 통신업체 NTT 도코모가 내년에 삼성전자가 개발한 운영체제(OS) 타이젠을 사용한 스마트폰(타이젠폰)을 시장에 내놓기로 했다고 요미우리신문을 인용해 30일 연합뉴스가 보도했다.
타이젠폰은 비슷한 시점에 일본 외의 나라에서도 판매될 예정으로 알려졌다.
타이젠은 삼성전자와 미국 인텔사가 공동 개발한 운영체제이다. 구글의 안드로이드나 애플의 'iOS'와 달리 오픈소스 OS인 리눅스를 기반으로 하고 있어서 NTT 도코모 같은 통신업체가 독자 서비스를 제공할 수 있다는 점이 장점으로 꼽힌다.
각국의 통신업체는 구글과 애플이 스마트폰 사업의 주도권을 장악하게 될까 우려하고 있다.
미국 조사회사 가트너에 따르면 지난 7~9월 세계 스마트폰 운영체제 시장에서 안드로이드가 72.4%, iOS가 13.9%를 차지하고 있다.
타이젠 개발·판매에는 영국의 보더폰, 프랑스의 프랑스텔레콤, 일본의 NTT 도코모, 파나소닉, NEC 등이 참가하고 있다고 요미우리신문은 전했다.
