SEOUL, KOREA – Kim Seok-Dong, the chairman of the Financial Services Commission, said on January 2, "We need to lend the investment banking industry more support to make it one of the growth businesses."
He said this in the New Year's opening ceremony for the financial derivatives exchange at the Korea Exchange, adding, "The capital market, combined well with the real economy, must be able to increase national wealth. To that end, we need to revise the capital market laws in ways to provide financial resources to innovative firms while supporting financially those companies doing business overseas."
Buoyed by his remarks, the prices for most securities shares have gone up for the day. The shares for Samsung Securities closed at 56,300 won, up 5.43 percent from the previous day. Woori Investment & Securities (7.17%), Daewoo Securities (6.25%), Hyundai Securities (4.00%), Kiwoom Securities (7.13%) all soared at a healthy clip. The securities industry index has also gained 5.05 percent for the day.

김석동 한마디에 증권株 '벌떡'…"금융투자산업 확실히 지원할 필요 있다"
김석동 금융위원장이 2일 “금융투자산업이 새로운 성장동력으로 자리매김할 수 있도록 확실히 지원할 필요가 있다”고 말했다.
김 위원장은 이날 한국거래소에서 열린 ‘2013년 증권·파생상품시장 개장식’에서 “자본시장이 실물경제와 선순환하면서 국부를 증대시키는 데 기여할 수 있도록 해야 한다”며 이같이 밝혔다. 그는 이를 위해 “자본시장법의 조속한 개정을 통해 혁신형 성장기업에 모험자본을 공급하고 우리 기업들의 해외 프로젝트 수주활동을 지원할 수 있도록 하겠다”고 강조했다. 금융위는 지난해 투자은행(IB) 육성을 핵심으로 하는 자본시장법 개정안을 국회에 제출했지만 상법개정안 관련 내용과 장외파생상품 중앙청산소(CCP) 설립 등을 제외한 나머지 안은 야당인 민주통합당의 반대로 정무위원회 통과가 좌절된 바 있다.
김 위원장은 “최근 영업 여건 악화로 어려움을 겪고 있는 금융투자산업의 활력과 경쟁력을 제고하기 위해 분사 등 조직 운용의 탄력성 제고를 위한 인가정책 유연화, 업무별 특성을 감안한 건전성 규제 합리화 등의 방안을 강구해 나갈 것”이라고 밝혔다. 아울러 “증시 상장 기준을 전반적으로 점검해 개선하고 창업 초기 중소기업들을 위한 맞춤형 주식시장인 코넥스(KONEX) 설립을 차질 없이 추진해 나가겠다”고 덧붙였다.
한편 이날 주식시장에선 증권주가 일제히 급등세를 보였다. 삼성증권이 5.43% 오른 5만6300원에 마감했고 우리투자증권(7.17%) 대우증권(6.25%) 현대증권(4.00%) 키움증권(7.13%) 등이 동반 오름세를 탔다. 덕분에 증권업종지수도 5.05% 뛰었다.
