Incheon, Korea – Incheon International Airport Corp. (IIAC) has taken part in a US$600-million bidding war to run a new airport to be built in Myanmar. The airport will have an annual passenger-handling capacity of 10 million.
According to investment banking sources on January 6, IIAC has passed a preliminary screening process to win the rights to manage a new Hanthawaddy International Airport. As many as 34 bidders including airport management corporations and investment funds had applied for the process and seven have been selected as second-round contestants. The announcement for the main bidding will be made available by the end of January.
Hanthawaddy Airport will be built in Bago, 80 kilometers northeast of Yangon, the capital of Myanmar. The first-stage construction plan calls for building an airport about one third the size of Incheon International Airport, with further expansion plans in the works.
IIAC could participate in the project as it could mobilize a 800-billion-won fund jointly invested by the National Pension Service and other private equity funds.

[마켓인사이트] 인천공항공사, 미얀마 신공항 운영권 수주전…자격심사 통과
인천공항공사가 6억달러 규모의 미얀마 신공항 운영권 수주전에 참여했다. 연 수용인원 1000만명 규모의 글로벌 공항 프로젝트를 두고 해외 공항들과 치열한 경쟁을 벌이고 있다.
6일 투자은행(IB) 업계에 따르면 인천공항공사는 최근 미얀마 한타와디국제공항 프로젝트 수주전의 사전 자격심사를 통과했다. 34곳의 해외 공항과 투자펀드들이 입찰에 참여해 이 중 인천공항을 비롯한 7곳이 2회전에 진출했다. 본입찰 공고는 이달 말께 나올 전망이다.
한타와디공항은 미얀마 양곤에서 북동쪽으로 80㎞ 떨어진 방고 지역의 36.45㎢ 부지에 건립되는 신공항으로 미얀마 중부 지역의 관문 역할을 맡게 된다. 1차로 인천공항의 3분의 1 수준에 조금 못 미치는 연 수용인원 1000만명 규모로 설립하고 추가로 확장한다는 계획이다. 운영사가 건설과 운영을 맡은 뒤 20~30년 후 미얀마 정부에 운영권을 양도하는 BOT 방식으로 진행된다. 한타와디공항 건립안은 2001년 세워졌지만 정치 불안 등을 이유로 중지됐다가 지난해 본격 재개됐다. 올해 6월 시작해 2016년 마무리한다는 방침이다.
IB업계에서는 7곳의 경쟁자 중에 인천공항이 상대적으로 우위에 있다고 보고 있다. 한타와디공항이 인천공항을 벤치마킹했기 때문이다. 미얀마 정부는 한타와디공항 건립계획을 세우기에 앞서 인천공항 측에 다양한 자문을 한 것으로 알려졌다.
인천공항공사는 모 사모펀드(PEF) 운용사, 국민연금 등과 추진하고 있는 해외 공동 투자 펀드인 코퍼릿파트너십펀드의 자금을 이번 프로젝트 입찰에 활용할 것으로 알려졌다. 이 펀드 규모는 8000억원 수준이다.
