SEOUL, KOREA – Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors gained two spots in the German import car market last year, climbing up to No. 1 there. Germany is the home of premium automobile brands such as Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi, in which competition is fierce among global carmakers.
According to Germany’s VDIK (International Association of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers), Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors sold 155,673 units in Germany last year, ranking No. 1 in Germany’s import car market. The two brands overtook Renault (150,740) and the Czech Republic’s Skoda (147,197).
In 2011, Renault came on top with 160,366 units, followed by Skoda with 142,611 and Hyundai/Kia with 128,931.
Key factors behind the strong performance of the Korean brands include the fact that they released a string of new cars there. Throughout Europe, Hyundai Motor released the new i30 that has been produced at its Czech factory from March. Kia Motors also unveiled its new Seed in the first half of last year in Europe.

현대·기아차, 獨 수입차 시장 1위
현대·기아자동차가 지난해 독일 자동차 시장에서 두 계단 뛰어오르며 수입차 판매 1위에 올랐다. 독일은 폭스바겐, 메르세데스 벤츠, BMW, 아우디 등 자동차 명가의 본고장이자 유럽 자동차 시장 격전지로 꼽힌다.
13일 독일 자동차공업협회에 따르면 현대·기아차는 지난해 독일에서 15만5673대를 팔아 프랑스 르노(15만740대)와 체코 스코다(14만7197대)를 제치고 수입차 판매 1위를 차지했다. 2011년에는 르노(16만366대)가 1위, 스코다(14만2611대)가 2위, 현대·기아차(12만8931대)가 3위였다.
현대·기아차가 독일 시장에서 선전하고 있는 것은 꾸준히 경쟁력있는 신차를 내놓았기 때문인 것으로 분석된다. 현대차는 지난해 3월부터 체코공장에서 생산하고 있는 신형 i30를 유럽 전역에 출시해 판매 실적을 끌어 올리고 있다. 기아차도 지난해 상반기 신형 ‘씨드’를 내놨다.
