SEOUL, KOREA - The Ministry of Knowledge Economy said on January 14 that Korea's shipbuilding industry last year took the No. 1 position with 35 percent of the world's shipbuilding orders. This is the second straight year for which Korean shipbuilders are ranked the top position.
But the total order volume stopped short of 7.5 million CGT (valued at US$29,984 million), a 45.7-percent decline from the previous year. The second place went to China with 7.1 million CGT ($15,450 million) and the third in ranking to Japan with 2.9 million CGT ($5,203 million).
A ministry official said, "Last year, the global amount of new ship orders shrank 36.8 percent, which has led to fiercer competition to win projects. Still, Korea's shipbuilders are doing well based on the experience and technical know-how in building high value-added vessels they have accumulated for decades."

2년 연속 세계 선박수주 1위
지식경제부는 지난 해 국내 조선업계가 전 세계 선박 수주량의 35%를 차지, 2년 연속 세계 선박수주 1위에 올랐다고 14일 발표했다.
하지만 수주 실적은 전년 대비 45.7% 감소한 750만CGT(부가가치 환산·299억8400만달러)에 그쳤다. 글로벌 경기침체 영향으로 선박 발주량이 줄었기 때문이다. 2위 중국은 710만CGT(154억5000만달러), 3위 일본은 290만CGT(52억300만달러)를 각각 기록했다. 선종·기종별로는 작년에 발주된 LNG-FSRU(부유식 가스 저장 재기화 설비) 4척을 국내 조선사들이 모두 수주했다. 액화천연가스(LNG)선 24척(수주 점유율 73%), 드릴십 26척(67%)을 따내는 등 해양플랜트와 고부가가치 선박 부문에서 높은 경쟁력을 나타냈다.
지경부 관계자는 “작년 세계 선박 발주량이 36.8% 줄어드는 등 수주 경쟁이 치열해지고 있다”며 “국내 조선사들이 고부가가치 선박 분야에서 쌓은 기술력을 토대로 경쟁력을 유지하고 있다”고 말했다.
