SEOUL, KOREA - Hyundai Heavy Industries won an order of building five super containers worth US$600 million. The company announced on January 16 that it has received orders for five 14,000-TEU container carriers commissioned by Seaspan of Canada. The contract includes an option to build another five ships with identical specifications.
The TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) is an inexact unit of cargo capacity used to describe the capacity of container ships and container terminals.
The ships will have a length of 368 meters, a width of 51 meters, and a height of 30 meters. Hyundai Heavy will build the vessels at its Ulsan dockyard and deliver from early 2015 in stages. Once delivered, the ships will be leased long term to Taiwan's Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp.
With the latest ship order on hand, Hyundai Heavy plans to focus more on merchant marine ships. The company, in order to make up for the lackluster performance last year, has set this year's sales revenue goal at $29.7 billion, 52.3 percent higher than last year's.

현대重, 초대형 컨船 5척 수주
현대중공업이 올해 전 세계에서 처음 발주된 초대형 컨테이너선 5척을 모두 수주했다.
현대중공업은 캐나다 시스판에서 1만4000TEU(1TEU는 20피트 컨테이너 1개)급 컨테이너 운반선 5척을 총 6억달러(약 5296억원)에 수주했다고 16일 발표했다. 이번 계약에는 같은 선박 5척에 대한 옵션이 포함돼 추가 수주도 기대된다.
축구장 4배 넓이에 달하는 초대형 컨테이너선으로 길이 368ｍ, 폭 51ｍ, 높이 30ｍ 규모다. 연료 소모 및 탄소 배출을 줄일 수 있는 전자제어식 엔진을 장착할 계획이다. 생태계 교란을 초래하는 선박 평형수(배의 수평을 유지하기 위해 싣는 물)를 정화할 수 있는 장비도 설치할 예정이다. 현대중공업은 울산조선소에서 배를 만들어 2015년부터 순차적으로 선주사에 인도할 계획이다. 인도 후에는 대만 양밍해운에 장기 용선된다.
현대중공업은 이번 수주를 계기로 상선 시장에서 공격적인 영업에 나설 방침이다. 현대중공업은 지난해의 수주 부진을 만회하기 위해 올해 목표를 전년 대비 52.3% 높은 297억달러로 잡았다.
