Korea's battery maker Rocket Electric Co. said on January 20 that it has signed an agreement with Mega Energy Group of Indonesia to develop a manganese ore mine in Kupang located in the province of East Nusa Tenggara.
The latest agreement will allow the Korean company to secure a stable supply of manganese, the critical element in the production of batteries. According to a company official, it could take an exclusive ownership for the first 200,000 tons of manganese worth 40 billion won.
Kim Do-won, executive of Rocket Electric, said, "The mining area developed by Mega Energy Group has an annual production capacity of 3 million tons, 50 percent more than Korea's total output of 2 million tons. We are looking into a possibility of maximizing profitability through diverse means."

로케트전기, 망간 개발권…인도네시아서 20만t 규모
로케트전기(회장 김종성)는 인도네시아 ‘메가 에너지 그룹’과 현지 ‘쿠팡’(Kupang) 지역에 있는 망간 광구 개발 및 판매 계약을 체결했다고 20일 밝혔다.
이번 계약으로 로케트전기는 전지사업의 핵심 연료인 망간을 채굴 단계부터 확보할 수 있게 됐다. 특히 초기 망간 생산량 20만t(400억원 상당)에 대해 독점적 권리까지 확보했다고 회사 측은 설명했다.
김도원 상무는 “메가그룹이 개발한 광구는 연간 생산량이 300만t으로 한국 전체 생산량 200만t보다도 많다”며 “다양한 수익성 극대화 방안을 검토하고 있다”고 밝혔다.
