The Ministry of Knowledge Economy said on January 20 that it would increase the thermal power-based electric supply of 15.8 million kW by 2020. The ministry has completed the process to select thermal power plant operators to be included in the sixth electricity supply plans and notified it to Dongbu Power Samcheok Corp. and Dongyang Power Co., the companies selected as operators.
Liquefied natural gas power plants will be operational between June 2015 and the end of 2017, with a capacity of 5.06 million kW. Coal-fired power plants will be built and operational by the end of 2020, with a total capacity of 10.74 million kW.
Meanwhile, the government will finalize the plan to expand nuclear power plant capacity after hearing more opinions from external experts and the general public. Given the Presidential transition is just a month away and people are still weary about nuclear power generation after the Fukushima meltdown in March 2011.

지경부 "2020년까지 화력발전 1580만kW 확충할 것"
지식경제부는 2020년까지 석탄과 액화천연가스(LNG)를 이용한 화력발전 공급용량을 1580만kW 확충하기로 했다고 20일 밝혔다.
지경부는 6차 전력수급 기본계획에 포함될 화력발전 사업자 선정을 마무리 짓고 그 결과를 삼척화력발전 사업권을 획득한 동부발전삼척과 동양파워 등 각 사업자에게 통보한 것으로 알려졌다.
LNG 발전소는 2015년 6월부터 2017년말 상업 운전을 목표로 발전용량 506만㎾의 시설이 추가로 들어선다.
석탄 발전소는 2018년 6월부터 2020년말까지 가동을 목표로 총 1074만㎾의 발전 시설이 건설된다.
정부는 그러나 원전의 경우 각계의 의견을 더 수용한 뒤 추가 건설 계획을 확정한다는 방침이다. 안전성에 대한 국민들의 불안감이 해소되지 않았고 새 정부 구성이 한달여 가량 남은 시점이라는 이유에서다.
