SEOUL, KOREA - Last year, the Korean won has appreciated against the Japanese yen 19.6 percent, the highest level since 1998 when it rose 21.8 percent. Meanwhile, the won-dollar variability ratio has remained the lowest level in five years.

According to the Bank of Korea on January 21, the end-of-the-year won exchange rate against 100 yens was 1,238.3 won, a 19.6-percent increase from December 31, 2011 when the rate was 1,481.4. This was largely due to "unlimited easing" monetary policy pushed for by the Shinzo Abe government.

 

As for the won exchange rate against the dollar, it was 1,070.6 won on December 31, 2012, up 7.6 percent from a year ago when the rate was 1,151.8 won. The variability ratio between won and dollar currency last year was 0.29 percent, one of the lowest among 15 currencies in 20 countries.

 

Those countries whose currency variability against the dollar is lower than that for Korea included Argentina (0.08%), China (0.1%), and Indonesia (0.25%).

작년 엔화대비 원화 절상률 19.6%…'14년來 최고'

지난해 엔화에 대한 원화의 절상률이 19.6%까지 폭등해 1998년(21.8%) 이후 가장 높은 것으로 나타났다. 원·달러 환율 변동률은 5년 만에 가장 낮은 수준을 기록했다. 

21일 한국은행에 따르면 작년 말 100엔당 원화 환율은 1238.3원으로 2011년 말(1481.4원)과 비교하면 무려 243.1원 내려 절상률은 19.6%에 달했다. 아베 신조 일본 정권의 무제한 양적완화 정책으로 엔화가치 하락이 두드러진 탓이다. 

달러화 대비 원화 환율은 1070.6원으로 전년 말(1151.8원)보다 81.2원 하락했다. 원화 절상률은 7.6%다.

지난해 연평균 원·달러 환율은 1126.8원, 원·엔 환율은 1413.7원으로 전년 대비 18.8원(절하율 1.7%), 22.7원(1.6%) 각각 상승했다.

작년 원·달러 환율 변동성(전일대비)은 0.29%로 주요 20개국 15개 통화 중 4번째로 낮다. 우리나라보다 변동성이 낮은 나라는 아르헨티나(0.08%), 중국(0.1%), 인도네시아(0.25%) 뿐이었다. 

한은 관계자는 "유로지역 위기가 악화와 완화를 반복하면서 시장 참가자들의 위기 민감도가 낮아지고 우리나라의 선물환포지션 한도 추가축소 등 외환부문 거시건정성정책 강화가 변동성 축소로 이어졌다"고 설명했다.
