DAESAN, KOREA - Hyundai Oilbank will begin the base oil business from the second half of 2014. Hyundai-Shell Base Oil, a joint venture between Hyundai Oilbank and multinational oil company Shell, held a groundbreaking ceremony on January 22 at its Daesan plant in South Choongchung Province. The 60:40 joint venture between Hyundai Oilbank and Shell had been established in April last year.
The 33,000-square-meter plant will be able to process 20,000 barrels of oil by-products a day and produce 650,000 tons of lubricating base oil a year.
Lubricating base oil is the basis of lubricant. Mixed with other additives, the lubricant can become finished products for automobiles, ships, and other industrial purposes. Hyundai-Shell Base Oil expects to earn more than 1 trillion won in sales revenue a year from 2015.
Kwon Oh-gap, president of Hyundai Oilbank, said, "By combining our efficient plant management know-how with Shell's global network, we will be able to create a maximum synergy effect."

현대오일뱅크 윤활기유 공장 '첫삽'
현대오일뱅크가 내년 하반기부터 윤활기유 사업을 본격적으로 시작한다.
현대오일뱅크와 다국적 에너지기업 셸의 합작법인인 현대쉘베이스오일은 22일 충남 대산공장에서 윤활기유 공장 기공식을 열었다. 이 회사는 현대오일뱅크와 셸이 6 대 4의 비율로 출자해 지난해 4월 출범했다.
공장은 3만3000㎡ 부지에 들어서며 하루 2만배럴의 원유 부산물을 처리해 연간 65만t의 윤활기유를 생산할 수 있는 규모로 지어진다. 내년 하반기 준공과 함께 상업 생산에 들어갈 예정이다.
윤활기유는 윤활유의 기초 원료다. 여기에 각종 첨가제를 섞어 자동차와 선박, 각종 산업용 등 용도별로 윤활유 완제품을 만든다. 현대쉘베이스오일은 중국 등 아시아 지역에 윤활기유를 수출해 2015년부터 연간 1조원가량의 매출이 가능할 것으로 기대하고 있다.
권오갑 현대오일뱅크 사장은 “셸의 글로벌 유통망과 현대오일뱅크의 안정적인 공장 운영 노하우를 결합해 시너지 효과를 극대화하겠다”고 말했다.
