University / Inha Inha University zooms in on New Songdo City for its second campus 'Global Knowledge Enterprise University Park,' is currently under planning and development by Inha University (http://www.inha.ac.kr) in New Songdo City. Education circles are keenly watching this second campus expansion plan by Inha University. They will be observing how Inha's launch of an innovative campus in the intelligent futuristic city of Songdo, 40 miles southwest of Seoul, could be geared into a win-win project with the port city of Incheon, which aspires to be a hub city of Northeast Asia. Several other universities at home and abroad are planning to open campuses in New Songdo City. However, Inha University's master plan is being seen by many observers as the most persuasive, because of the fact that it is a substantial regional stronghold university. Inha wishes to establish its identity as a 'Global Knowledge Enterprise University,' by focusing on the University's strengths in science and technology. Moreover, Inha University's second campus blueprint is in line with Incheon City's Songdo U-City plan most fittingly among several universities' new campus plans in Songdo wishing to nurture New Songdo City as a cutting-edge knowledge industry cluster. In this regard, Dr. Hong Seoung-yong, president, Inha University who was reelected as the 11th president recently, noted: 'For Inha to develop into one of the global top-10 universities in the fields of IT, BT & logistics, national growth industries in the 21st century, it was inevitable that we should open a new campus in New Songdo City. Both Incheon, aiming to be a hub city in Northeast Asia and a community stronghold university, and Inha University will benefit from the launch of our second campus there.' According to the second campus plan of Inha University, covering an area of 550,000 pyeong (roughly 1,815,000 m2), an educational-industrial as well as research-associated science & technology-oriented institution will be attained in its first stage, featuring IT, BT, NT as well as aerospace and mechanical field-related laboratories. In addition to this, an R&BD (research & business development)-oriented national policy research center and the central functions such as joint research & development facilities will be prepared, plus research support complex city function facilities in the interests of organic connection of pivotal functions and support functions. In its second stage plan which will cover 250,000 pyeong (around 825,000 m2), there will be an international collaboration special hospital, clinical medicine laboratory, and the first stage project's extension. In addition the Global U8 joint project will be implemented. Benchmarking prestigious international universities Committing himself to ambitious aspirations for this campus formation, Dr. Hong said, 'Inha University will forge the highest campus town, both nominally and virtually, in the world after benchmarking Silicon Valley of Stanford University, Science Park of Cambridge University, and others that succeeded as worldwide educationalindustrial connection models.' Moving to the globalization of university education, the Inha president who held various posts, including vice minister of Maritime Affairs & Fisheries, stressed that he firmly believes that the Songdo campus establishment by Inha would boost globalization of university education as well. The president, who explained that management innovation ability stems from his diverse administration experience, said that to become a hub university of Northeast Asia, Inha has to increase lectures with elearning. For example, Dr. Hong who elaborated that education's paradigms are changing from established closed education to cyberspace as well as open space, added that Inha University also has increased e-learning lectures from the existing 20 lectures to 120 current elearning lectures. Korea's universities are changing out of necessity, but to become a first-class knowledge country globally, they must strive further for more creative innovation, he emphasized, referring to the fact that Inha still has a long way to go, even though it is already one of the top 10 universities in Korea. Inha had aimed at becoming 'MIT of the Orient' as a super-first rate university in 1954 when the University was established and is now striving to stretch itself into one of the global 100 prestigious private universities by realizing that establishment goal. Hong expressed the view that the accomplishment of this goal is impossible in the current campus environment, adding that particularly, science & technology demand practical education through an education-industrial collaboration. For that reason, Inha University is pursuing the establishment of the Global Knowledge Enterprise University in Songdo. Inha's Global Knowledge Enterprise University campus is based on 'Global', namely internationalization, which will be a collaboration with the 'Global U8 Consortium' that Inha University has been utilizing for cooperating with prestigious universities in the meanwhile. Hong explained that Inha University has been promoting student exchanges and joint research with eight prestigious international universities, including America's University of Rhode Island & University of Washington, China's Xiamen University, France's University of Le Havre, Israel's University of Haifa, Australia's RMIT (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University). To develop international programs that utilize each university's merits in the coming months and years, Inha will extend and develop even more international exchanges by establishing an international exchange center, language education institute as well as international joint research center, he said. 'Since our university's 'Global Knowledge Enterprise University' campus establishment is an important project not only just for Inha University's development, but also Incheon's development in the 21st century, we will strive to discharge our responsibilities as a think-tank to advance the Republic of Korea' , he explained. In step with the government's logistics nurturing policy Considering the fact that New Songdo City will become a priority for Seoul's efforts to make Korea a Northeast Asia logistics hub, the president mentioned Inha University's development plan for the logistics field with its Songdo campus as a logistics differentiation university. Actually, Inha University has been continuously advancing its differentiation projects regarding logistics education and research with wholehearted support of Hanjin Group, a worldwide logistics enterprise, as well as Inha University's foundation. There is widespread recognition of Incheon's geographical advantages, located at the gateway of Northeast Asia, and the importance of logistics, the core of a nation's economy and corporate competitiveness in the 21st century. For instance, the University is constructing a worldwide logistics database in its JungSeok Memorial Library, the largest and most state-of-theart digital library in Korea and to produce the highest management in the Asia-Pacific area. Equipped with practical knowledge as well as international sensitivity, Inha University is intensively supporting and nurturing talent by differentiating the APSL (Asia Pacific School of Logistics) for the first time in Korea. In addition, Hong emphasized that Inha University has been nurturing the core leaders to usher in the emergence of Korea as a Northeast Asia logistics hub by establishing the Global Logistics Management Program (GLNP) for CEOs for the first time in Korea in concert with the Korea International Trade Association (KITA) since 2005. As a result, Inha University was designated as a superior university for two consecutive years from the Ministry of Education & Human Resources Development (MOE) and received support worth 10 billion won (around $10.50 million) over 5 years in connection with its logistics special graduate program. Inha University's MGLM program as a master course of international joint logistics management is a unique program which is operated jointly with U8 Consortium participation universities as well as overseas distinguished professors, based on the 'Global U8 Consortium' (http://u8.inha.ac.kr) that Inha University formed with eight prestigious international universities. Logistics science is currently set up as a logistics major within the graduate school of management, the graduate school of industry or the graduate school of international commerce, rather than being set up as an independent special subject of study. Dr. Hong pointed out that now is a difficult time to nurture the highest-notch global logistics talent. In this context, Inha University's MGLM program is expected to spearhead the logistics industry's innovation and contribute greatly to the Northeast Asia logistics-centered materialization by producing high-grade logistics talent within a short period. President Hong pointed out that Songdo Incheon Free Economic Zone is becoming an even greater object of interest because it will help determine the future of the Republic of Korea. He noted that Incheon possesses superb international competitiveness plus huge growth potential, since it is located in the heart of Northeast Asia. In that regard, he advised that universities' research activities will also be very pivotal to satisfy international business requirements, IT/BT, & logistics, and the needs of IFEZ's cutting-edge innovation cluster strategy. For IFEZ to gain global recognition, he advised that the Zone has to brand Incheon inherent regional features besides equipping itself with international standards in terms of the amount of materials and scale, plus develop an organic cooperation system with universities and other relevant institutions that satisfy such requirements. At a point of time when the harmony of globalization and localization ( 'Glocalization' ) is paramount, the president firmly believes that Inha University's differentiation fields such as IT, BT, NT & logistics will globalize Korea's growth engines in the 21st century. Moreover, they will become a standard of 'Glocalization,' which pursues Incheon's development as a hub city of Northeast Asia. Re-elected as Inha University President. After serving as the 10th president over the past four years, Dr. Hong was reelected as the 11th president of Inha University recently, showing that his efforts to allow Inha to become a hub university of Northeast Asia are paying off in several aspects. He frequently advocates the 'ABC' argument as qualities needed by a president of a university. His conclusion is that a president of a university has to play a role as Actor, Builder, and Cheerleader to make university organization culture with high spirits. Yet, above all he insists that domestic universities also have to adapt and grow like a nation. When compared with the years preceding his inauguration, Inha University has posted a 15%'s high growth rate every year, considering all management indexes such as school buildings (1.4 times), budget (1.7 times), professor SCI (scientific citation index) paper (1.6 times), e-learning student numbers (1.7 times), the examinations competition rate for entrance (3.1 times), the percentage of employment (2.4 times), and dispatch of students for studying abroad dispatch (6.8 times) - in comparison with foreign universities' normal growth rate of 7%. Over the past four years, president Hong assisted with the collection of 232.4 billion won (around $245 million) in conjunction with outward contributions, excluding foundation contributions. As a result of these efforts, Inha University is maintaining its status as one of the nation's top 10 universities over the past four years according to the survey by the local JoongAng Daily newspaper, SCI paper numbers are rapidly on the increase and overseas awareness about Inha is growing fast, Hong pointed out. Concerning university management tasks as well as goals over the forthcoming four years, Hong said he would strive for talent production needed for global knowledge society economy through advanced education, pointing out that to make knowledge-based society education's frame stand, uniform, unilateral, and vertical education's frame have to be eliminated. To this end, he committed himself to establishing the university's identity as the 'Global Knowledge Enterprise University,' besides promoting the 10- 10-management strategy (annual university growth rate of 10% plus 10% benefit boost) for the university's continuous growth as well as its second campus expansion's smooth discussion with the authorities concerned. In the second stage BK21 project too, announced by MOE recently, Inha University became a focal point of other universities' attention by making great strides toward becoming a researchcentered university, as the University's 12 project teams were selected to receive 50 billion won (around $52.80 million) in relation to the BK21 project.
Proud Son of Inha Urges Higher Students' Ambitions As a key figure who has transformed LG Electronics into one of the world's top three manufacturers of digital products, Lee Youngha, an Inha University graduate and president & CEO, of the digital appliance company, LG Electronics, shared his thoughts regarding his experiences at college and the philosophy behind managing a company that has posted an annual growth rate of 22% on average since 2000 in the global sales of digital products: Q: What advice could you give to bring about the future growth of Inha University As an educational institution of higher learning, Inha University, the roots of which can be traced back to its earlier years as a college of engineering, should provide in-depth and specialized education. It should set itself apart from other institutions and consolidate its image as a leader of higher learning in the field of engineering. Also, and since Inha has already transformed itself into a university, I hope it can grow and leave a mark worthy of its name, raising manpower who can play active roles on the global stage and be revered as a new brand among universities around the world. Q: Could you tell our readers some of the memories you have of your earlier years at Inha During my years at Inha, I majored in chemical engineering. Due to the characteristics of an engineering college, I occasionally had to bump into German texts. Since French was my choice of second language during my years at the high school, I was at a loss with the German language. Thus, and as I had no solid base of the language, I kept repeating and memorizing as hard as I could with a firm determination. It is true that every profession should be carried out under a solid foundation, Even though, and as circumstances had not been so favorable, I had no other choice but to exhibit my unyielding spirit. Nonetheless, there is no alteration in my view that a solid foundation in carrying out a task is undeniably important. To me who had thought it important to acquire experience, I also have the memories of having a small-scale explosion while conducting an experiment and of making alcohol secretly from ethyne alcohol for a drink. I wonder whether there are still fellows there who are following my recklessness in my youth Q:As a graduate of Inha University, what advice can you give to students at Inha for them to become capable professionals on the global stage To those young students at Inha, I would like to tell them to draw a big picture to embrace their visions. Only then, it will be possible for them to discern which tasks should be performed today, within a year or in five years. The future belongs to those who make it to happen. And, the world will be none other than the stage on which they will play. I hope these youngsters can enrich their minds in the space called university and become the real players on the global stage. I hope they can become wise enough to devote time and energy for tomorrow rather than show the foolishness of taking in the sweet marshmallow now. Q: Would you share with our readers your management philosophy People have frequently compared me to a field commander type of leader endowed with a strong driving force. In terms of management philosophy, I can spell out three principles that cannot be beaten: Firstly, the righteous operation in corporate management is like a pillar of a building. However a large achievement one makes through management if the righteousness as the pillar of a building breaks down all the towers one has built can collapse in smoke. Bearing in mind the truth that any business that does not live up to this spirit of forthrightness will eventually be turned away by customers, LG keeps on striving to transform a good company into a great company. Secondly, we have to keep in mind that quality is none other than the marketing itself. The sacrificing of quality is like the breaking down of the trust from customers. There is no customer who intends to buy a product the quality of which is suspicious. With this mind, all the employees at the DA team have been working under the belief that they are surely the quality managers. The DA team, which has staked its fate with premium products to aim for the global top, has entered into a new path where it is impossible to live by without a quality base. In this sense, the quality goal of DA team is not just customer satisfaction but customer impression. Lastly, wealth and honor become meaningless when we lose our health. Safety at work sites is like our health. Only when employees of a company can be kept healthy and can work in a safe environment, corporate goals will be meaningful with the dreams of all the employees, including their families, fulfilled.
