SEOUL, KOREA - “E-Mart index,” an indicator of the current trend of consumer sentiment, remained below 100 in the every quarter of 2012. E-Mart announced on January 29 that its E-Mart index, created by comparing quarterly consumption trends of 476 items with those of the previous quarter, stood at 98.1 in the fourth quarter of last year.Even during the previous quarters from January to September 2012, the E-Mart index remained below 100, averaging at 97.1. If the index is above 100, it indicates improvement in consumption trend. If the index is below 100, it means deterioration in consumption trend.
This is the first time for the index to remain below 100 during the entire year since 2009. The index reached a record-low at 92.0 in the second quarter of last year.
Amid a prolonged economic slowdown, the sales of daily necessities such as milk and ramen also marked a decline. For items such as milk, ramen, and salt, the E-Mart index stood at 93.1, 98.3, and 83.3, respectively, last year.

소비자 실질경기를 보여주는 '이마트 지수'가 지난해 모든 분기에서 100을 밑돈 것으로 나타났다.
이마트는 476개 상품군의 분기별 소비량을 전년 동기와 비교해 만드는 이마트 지수가 지난해 4분기 98.1를 기록했다고 29일 밝혔다. 앞서 1~3분기 역시 이마트 지수는 100 이하를 나타내 연 평균 97.1을 기록했다. 1년 내내 마이너스를 나타냈다.
이마트지수가 100 이상이면 소비 호전을, 100 미만이면 소비 악화를 뜻한다. 한해 모든 분기가 100 미만을 기록한 것은 2009년 이후 3년 만이다. 지난해 2분기엔 92.0으로 역대 최저치도 나왔다.
항목별로도 지난해 주생활 지수(100.5)를 제외한 모든 지수가 100 미만이었다. 의생활 지수 94.0, 식생활 지수 97.3, 문화생활 지수가 95.0 등으로 저조했다.
특히 불황이 계속되면서 우유, 라면 같은 생필품 소비까지 줄어들었다. 지난해 우유의 이마트 지수는 93.1, 라면은 98.3, 소금은 83.3이었다.
김민 신세계 유통산업연구소 부장은 "지속된 경기 침체로 생필품 소비 감소 등 소비 위축이 심화됐다" 며 "반값 상품, 대체 상품 등 불황형 상품군을 제외하면 대부분 상품군이 2012년 연간 지수 100미만을 기록했다"고 설명했다.
