Innovative Technology / LS Cable LS Cable Ltd. develops groundbreaking LS-HFC Network solution By taking advantage of seed business activation, such as LS-HFC Network, LS Cable Ltd. (http://www.lscable .co.kr), is seeking new growth opportunities for the company. Applying the high-speed chip and circuit technology to the existing CATV network, an innovative telecommunication solution (LS-HFC Network) providing high-speed data and video (HD level) service has been developed by LS Cable. As high-speed Internet usage ratio of wire broadcasting subscribers is rapidly growing worldwide, the market demand for high-speed wireless broadcasting network equipment like LS-HFC is forecasted to grow up to $20 billion in the coming years. Considering that LS Cable's sales were on a scale of 2.48 trillion won (around $2.52 billion) in 2005 - namely domestic sales of 1.28 trillion won and exports of 1.2 trillion won respectively, the company's new Seed Biz LS-HFC Network business is expected to bring a new revenue source that is eight times higher than today's LS Caleb entire turnover scale. Breakthrough in CATV data transmission speed In a nutshell, 'LS-HFC' which was developed by LS Cable for the first time globally, is a high-speed wire broadcasting network technology that radically improved CATV's data transmission speed, according to executives of the company familiar with the technology. Senior vice president Kim Dong-young, Seed Biz Management Office, LC Cable Ltd. who assumed leadership of 'LS-HFC' development, explains: 'This LS-HFC solution is to offer the highest speed of high speed Internet service which is being provided through established CATV, with maximum 200Mbps that is five times faster than the current 40Mbps by applying highspeed telecommunication technology and a new concept's network utilization technology.' In the light of the service trend that wire & mobile telecommunication are going to be changed to Integrated Multimedia Service by a single network and telecommunication service also is going to be changed from Data centric service based on PC to Multiple Service based on Home network in the future, Kim emphasized that 'LS-HFC' development's significance has huge significance. In other words, each individual service such as wire/mobile telecommunication, Internet & broadcasting (VoD) is going to be changed to Integrated Multimedia service like Internet (VoIP), Mobile Phone (PCS), Super-highway Internet, & IPTV (HD). Data Service based on PC also is expected to change to Multiple Service based on Home network including PC, TV, VoIP, Security, CE & Home Server. The vice president said that 'LS-HFC' solution developed by LS Cable's own technology, is to apply high speed modulation technology, which has good endurance within a noisy environment, to established CATV. LS-HFC offers bi-directional 200Mbps speed through modifying a traditional CATV network and applying the internet network technologies. Stable data service is possible with access control technology in cases also where a host of subscribers is connected. Economical investment when network expands In regard to the strong points of 'LSHFC', Kim noted: 'Using the established coaxial cable network of HFC Network, there is no need to invest for establishing the network' , plus upgrading the actual data & video throughput as well as using the advantage of the low loss section (10~50dB). Alongside of this, it can provide seamlessly high-definition's HD-notch moving screen when servicing Video on Demand and it is also possible to create a power line-based home network system without additional equipment, according to Kim. Kim went on to say: 'To sum up, key note is as follows: In terms of cable broadcasting station, 'LS-HFC' means economical investment when the network expands; the substitution of expensive CMTS; the differentiated VoD service; and replacing only modems for upgrading (200Mbps- 500Mbps).' In terms of transmission lines as well, it means transmitting the information without signal loss; low costs for establishing lines; using a LS-ONU, and extension of installation per Cell. For subscribers, it brings high-speed transmission with max. 200Mbps, high quality Video Service, mutual communication among subscribers, and extra service connected to power line. LS Cable executives familiar with this new concept technology underscored: 'With this LS-HFC solution's development as an impetus, domestic CATV business providers which have been suffering from a stormy passage due to low data speed, a shortcoming of CATV, for TPS (integration multimedia service market) inroads by which digital broadcasting, voice telephone as well as high-speed Internet are offered simultaneously, have come to be able to hold more wide selection rights in broadcasting network construction facility investment.' In particular, senior vice president Kim stressed that 'LS-HFC' is expected to be accepted as the most economical alternative in that high-speed data service is possible while utilizing established CATV as it is and can materialize TPS perfectly. He added that the company has a development project under way to be commercialized by 2007 in regard to a technology as well, which can transmit data over 500Mbps. In conjunction with its activation phase, LS Cable executives predict that the company's 'LS-HFC' will be activated within one or two years, starting from the second half of the year. Accordingly, LS Cable assesses that the potential for new market inroads is bright, including Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, to say nothing of countries in which CATV is being popularized like China and the United States. Furthermore, Kim pointed out that China, Southeast Asia, the United States, and Europe are very interested in it since it can service with reasonable price. He concluded his interview by stressing that the government's support is in a sense important - not the least for activating this technology because 'LS-HFC' technology has sufficient potential to be able to become Korea's representative business among u-IT839 strategies.
