SEOUL, KOREA - Locnall, which runs a smartphone navigation application "Kimgisa," developed a new technology that offers a short-cut guide using a big data based on a real-time collection and analysis of the driving data of users. This technology is available since Kimgisa application is based on smartphones that enables GPS-using position finding function and network-based data communcation.
The information on the position and speed of the drivers who turn on the Kimgisa application, is transmitted on a real time basis to the server. The analysis of what speed they are getting in the areas concerned, is re-transmitted to their smartphones, providing them with the expected arrival time.
This is a kind of social navigation wherein users play the role of both information providers and receivers. The more the users are, the higher accuracy the technology provides. At present, the users of Kimgisa applications are estimated at less than 4 million. To develop this technology, Locnall spent about a year for R&D, and doubled its server capacity.
김기사, '길 안내' 훨씬 빨라진다…"어떻게"
이 기술은 김기사 앱이 GPS를 통한 위치 파악과 네트워크에 기반한 데이터 통신이 모두 가능한 스마트폰을 기반으로 하기 때문에 가능하다.
운전 중 김기사 앱을 켜 놓은 이용자의 위치·속도 정보는 실시간으로 서버에 전송돼 해당 구간에서 어느 정도의 속도를 내는지 분석을 거쳐 모든 사용자의 스마트폰에 다시 전송된다. 목표지를 설정해 놓은 이용자에게는 예상 도착시간도 제공된다.
이용자가 정보 제공자 역할과 수신자 역할을 동시에 하는 일종의 `소셜 내비게이션`이다. 이용자가 많아질수록 정보의 정확도는 높아진다. 현재 김기사 이용자는 400만명에 못 미친다.
박종환 록앤올 대표는 “상용화 이전 시험 사용을 해보니 기존 김기사보다 도착 예상 시간이 정확해졌다”며 “이용자가 늘어날수록 정확도는 더 높아질 것”이라고 말했다.
록앤올은 이 기술을 준비하기 위해 1년간 연구개발하고 서버는 두 배로 늘렸다.
같은 통신형 스마트폰 내비게이션으로 경쟁하고 있는 T맵과는 다른 방식으로, T맵은 5만대의 계열사 콜택시·트롤리카·렌터카 등을 이용해 실시간 교통정보를 수집한다. 이에 더해 신호등 변경 주기나 교통량 분석자료 등 과거에 쌓아 놓은 데이터를 활용하면서 정확도를 높인다.
박 대표는 “소셜 내비게이션 방식은 수집·유지보수 비용이 전혀 들지 않고 거의 모든 지역을 커버할 수 있다”며 “토요일·일요일이 포함돼 유난히 짧은 이번 설 연휴에 진가를 제대로 발휘할 것”이라고 말했다.
해외에선 소셜 내비게이션 기술이 먼저 개발된 사례가 있다. 이스라엘 벤처기업 `웨이즈`다. 이 기업은 최근 애플과 5억~7억5000만달러의 가격으로 인수합병 협상을 진행하고 있다.
