Samsung Electronics WiBro to Supply Up to the Maximum 50Mbps 4G to converge specialized communication services Samsung Electronics executives expect that the company will be able to supply WiBro equipment to over 10 countries this year, and that WiBro will be rapidly embraced all over the world as "the future killer application." Samsung is already negotiating with 16 countries regarding export of WiBro. Lee Ki-Tae, president of Telecommunication Network Business, Samsung Electronics, noted the significance of WiBro commercialization, with its development well under way due to the initiatives of Samsung Electronics. He explained that WiBro is a communication technology in which high-speed wireless Internet is possible on the move too up to the maximum 50Mbps in terms of its transmission speed. Lee added, "WiBro is a service to be able to supplement service business provider's turnover and profit and loss with low investment expenses and high transmission speed, in comparison with established mobile communication services like BcN (Broadband converged Network) or Wireless LAN which don't guarantee mobility." When 3.5 generation service like HSDPA or WiBro is commercialized, customers will be able to have screen telephone conversations with a cellular phone seamlessly and download video data within just one or two minutes, Lee explained. Accordingly, the president said he is convinced that cellular phones will emerge as a central piece of equipment of digital convergence that merges various functions, such as notebook computer, camcorder camera, MP3, TV etc. In relation to the 4G Forum Samsung Electronics has initiated, Lee explained: "Samsung Electronics is aggressively promoting its 4G mobile communication's standardization activities as well, which is anticipated to be commercialized by 2010 or thereabouts." To take the initiative in 4G mobile communication which is expected to assume leadership of the global communication market's high value-added by converging the entire mobile communication fields such as 3G and 3.5G in future, global many countries are competing for the leadership of 4G technology. Concerning 4G's characteristics as well as service environment, Lee said that large capacity data service, which is impossible in 3G, three dimension cubic screen, and mobile virtual reality are deemed to be possible. In this stage, experts note that it will now be possible to converge complicated specialized communication services.
