SEOUL, KOREA – Apple’s mobile payment policy serves as a setback for KakaoTalk’s mobile content distribution service “Kakao Page,” slated to be launched in March. iPhone users will be unable to purchase mobile contents on Kakako Page.
Kakao will provide iOS-based smartphones user with the upcoming KaKao Page in a view-only form because Apple’s App payment policy goes against Kakao’s content sales model. Kakako Page is a monetized content distribution platform where cyber money “Choco” is circulated to enable the purchase of mobile content that will be updated periodically in line with changes in the mobile environment.
Apple’s policy requires fee-based mobile contents to obtain App approval wherever they are updated. In other words, whenever new fee-based contents are listed on Kakao Page, they need to be approved by Apple.
Kakao’s decision to offer a view-only version of Kakao Page is expected to inconvenience users. Meanwhile, Kakao Page will be offered in a full-blown manner on Google Play Store which puts no restrictions on content production, registrations, distribution and payments.
