SEOUL, KOREA - LG Electronics is to expand its existing production plant in Vietnam, an emerging country as a global IT production base.
The Korean home appliance giant announced its plan on Feb. 17 that it would invest 300 million dollars to its existing home appliance plant in Haiphong, Vietnam to change it into a new production base with the size of 1.322 million ㎡ by the year of 2020.
The plant to be newly established in Haiphong is expected to the largest one of all LG’s plants in neighboring areas including China. The company has a plan to produce audio and video goods and domestic appliances there.
Vietnam is emerging as a production base of global companies and its central and local governments are enticing many of them with various tax supports. For now, Intel, HP, IBM and Panasonic have moved their production plants to the country. Samsung is also operating a plant with the capability of producing 150 million mobile phones per annum in Hanoi.
LG전자, 베트남에 3억달러 투자...생산 공장 확충
LG전자가 글로벌 정보기술(IT) 생산기지로 급부상하고 있는 베트남에 생산 공장을 확충한다.
LG전자는 17일 베트남 하이퐁의 기존 가전공장 생산기지에 3억달러를 투자해 오는 2020년까지 40만평방미터 규모의 생산시설을 새로 확보할 계획이라고 밝혔다.
LG전자는 하이퐁과 흥옌에 가전공장을 운영해 왔으나 최근 임대기간이 만료되고 공간이 부족해 신규 부지를 확보하기 위한 차원에서 추가 투자하는 것이라고 덧붙였다.
하이퐁에 들어서는 공장은 LG전자가 중국 등 다른 나라에서 가동하는 가전 공장 가운데 가장 큰 규모가 될 전망이다. 이곳에선 오디오·비디오(AV) 제품과 백색가전 제품을 생산할 계획이다. LG전자는 향후 협력사들과 함께 이 부지에 동반 입주하는 것을 고려하고 있다.
LG전자 관계자는 “임대기간이 만료되고 공간이 부족해 신규 부지를 확보하는 차원이지 글로벌 생산 전략이 변경돼 기존 중국 등의 생산기지를 베트남으로 옮기는 것은 아니다”라고 설명했다.
베트남은 최근 글로벌 기업들의 생산기지로 급부상하고 있다. 베트남 정부와 지방정부는 글로벌 업체들을 유치한다는 목표 아래 각종 세제 지원 등을 제시하고 있다. 현재 인텔과 휴렛패커드(HP), IBM, 파나소닉 등이 진출했다. 삼성전자도 이미 베트남 하노이 박닝 지역에서 연간 1억5000만대 휴대폰을 생산하는 공장을 운영하고 있으며, 최근에는 북부에 있는 타이응웬 성의 옌빙공단 관리업체와 공장부지 임대계약을 체결하기도 했다.
