SEOUL, KOREA – A Database Management System (DBMS)-based navigation system that sports real-time updates will come out in the second half of this year. Such a navigation system that automatically updates maps on a data by data basis via wireless networks is unprecedented.
On Sunday, Hyundai MnSOFT said it is currently conducting tests to launch its navigation system capable of updating maps in real time within this year. Its navigation system will be equipped with Real Time Tech’s mobile DBMS, which was developed under the auspices of the WBS (World Best Software) project pursued by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy.
Preexisting navigation systems’ maps are stored in the form of file units, so the entire file has to be updated when changes occur, therefore making real-time updates impossible.
Hyundai MnSOFT’s new navigation system has converted file-unit maps into data to receive updates in real time. The conversion of map files into databases will enable the provision of various additional services such as web surfing. Since there is no need for tampering with the entire file, a 10 MB network volume will do suffice.
