Seoul, Korea - The IT companies all around the world had been keeping a close eye on Samsung Electronics as to who will be chosen to handle its Big Data, and it was known that five companies were shortlisted for the job.
According to the industry sources, Samsung Electronics recently started its standard technology selection process for a system that will handle the company’s Big Data, and named five candidates for proof of concept (PoC) process, and the solutions by IBM, EMC, Oracle, SAP and Teradata were known to be going through the PoC process.
An insider well-knowledged in this project commented that Samsung provided its data to the five companies and started the PoC process, and the process is expected to be completed by the end of this month.
The industry holds a high-level of expectations on this Big Data system project, not only because it will be a testing ground to guage feasibility of implementing the Big Data System, but also it will stimulate other industries in and outside of Korea to adopt the Big Data system.
In fact, other big Korean companies were known to have expressed interest in implementing their own Big Data system at the news of Samsung starting to build one.
삼성 빅데이터 `5파전`으로 압축
글로벌 정보기술(IT) 업계의 뜨거운 관심을 모으고 있는 삼성전자 `빅데이터` 도입 프로젝트가 5파전 양상으로 전개될 전망이다.
24일 업계에 따르면 빅데이터 구현에 필요한 표준 기술 선정에 들어간 삼성전자는 최근 5개 사업자를 후보로 선정하고 개념검증(PoC)을 진행 중이다.
개념검증이란 신규 솔루션의 도입이 필요하다고 판단돼 필요한 기능을 확인하는 절차로, IBM·EMC·오라클·SAP·테라데이타 솔루션이 선정된 것으로 전해졌다.
이번 프로젝트에 정통한 업계 관계자는 “삼성이 5개 회사에 데이터를 주고 성능 검증에 들어갔다”며 “이달 말까지 (개념검증을) 진행하는 일정”이라고 말했다.
신규 솔루션을 도입하기까지 통상 개념검증 후 벤치마크테스트(BMT)를 하고 시험 도입(파일럿)하는 단계를 거친다. 개념검증은 공급을 위한 첫 관문인 셈이다.
삼성전자 빅데이터 구축 프로젝트는 업계 주목 대상이다. 삼성이 자체적으로 빅데이터 시스템을 구축하는 건 이번이 처음인 데다, 전사 활용을 목적으로 추진되고 있기 때문이다.
또 프로젝트 자체의 사업성 측면 뿐 아니라 국내외 산업계에 빅데이터 도입을 촉진하는 계기로 작용할 수 있어 기대가 크다.
실제로 삼성전자가 빅데이터 도입에 착수했다는 소식이 전해지면서 국내 다른 대기업들도 빅데이터 구축에 관심을 표명하는 것으로 전해졌다.
삼성은 그간 빅데이터를 예의주시해왔다. 삼성그룹 사장단은 서초 사옥에서 송길영 다음소프트 부사장을 초청, 새로운 가치를 제공하는 빅데이터를 주제로 강연을 들었다. 빅데이터로 새로운 사업 기회를 찾을 수 있다는 내용이었다.
빅데이터는 방대한 데이터 속에서 유의미한 정보를 분석·도출하는 기술이다.
