Seoul, Korea - The CEO of Samsung Display made a public comment that he will reconcile with LG Display and even go so far as to sharing its patents with LG.
Kim Ki-nam, the CEO of Samsung Display spoke to the press at the general meeting of Korea Display Industry Association on the 26th and said he will “proceed with the negotiation on the patent lawsuit step-by-step,” and said he is also considering cross-licensing the whole patents.
Kim explained his motive for the reconciliatory gesture - “the Japanese, Taiwanese and Chinese companies compete with apparent back up by their governments. We should’t waste our resources on unproductive dispute. We must be in a constructive competition to make better products. That’s how we will maintain the competitiveness in the global market.”
He also emphasized that the scope of cross-licensing should include not only include the legally disputed seven OLED patents of LG and another seven LCD patents of Samsung, but also be extended to other patents.
Toward Kim’s remarks, Han Sang-beom, the CEO of LG Display commented that he is putting together the negotiators at the moment and will be able to start the negotiation next month.

김기남 삼성디스플레이 사장이 LG디스플레이와 향후 크로스 라이선스까지 추진하겠다는 의지를 밝혔다.
김 사장은 26일 서울교육문화회관에서 열린 한국디스플레이산업협회 총회에서 기자들과 만나 “소송과 관련된 특허 협상은 단계적으로 진행할 것”이라면서 “전체 특허에 대한 크로스 라이선스도 생각하고 있다”고 말했다.
크로스 라이선스란 각 기업이 갖고 있는 지식재산권을 서로 사용할 수 있도록 권리를 주는 것이다. 이 날 김기남 사장과 한상범 사장은 한국디스플레이산업협회 총회에 참석해, 지난 4일 회동 이후 첫 만남을 가졌다.
김 사장은 “일본·대만·중국 기업들이 정부의 지원까지 받아가며 (시장을) 공략하는데 한국 기업들은 소모적인 분쟁만 하고 있어서는 안될 것”이라며 “국내 기업간 소모전을 피하고 건설적인 경쟁을 통해 더 좋은 제품을 만들어 가야 세계와 경쟁할 수 있을 것”이라고 취지를 설명했다.
크로스 라이선스의 범위는 현재 소송 진행 중인 LG디스플레이의 OLED 특허 7건과 삼성디스플레이의 LCD 특허 7건 외에 다른 특허도 포함되어야 한다고 강조했다.
김 사장의 발언에 대해 LG디스플레이는 숙고하겠다는 입장이다. 소송 중인 특허 협상은 다음 달부터 시작될 예정이다.
한상범 LG디스플레이 사장은 “삼성과 LG가 가처분 소송을 취하함으로써 특허 관련 실무 협상이 남았다”며 “현재 협상에 나설 실무진 구성에 대해 논의 중이고 다음 달에는 협상을 시작할 수 있을 것”이라고 전망했다.
