SEOUL, KOREA – Six out of ten electronics and IT companies feared that global patent disputes will intensify in the wake of the Apple-Samsung patent war. In particular, they pointed out manufacturers of electronics parts will be hit the hardest. According to a survey of 384 Korean electronics and IT companies, conducted from November 2012 to February 2013 by Korea Electronics Association (KEA)’s Patent Support Center, companies related to software and services (65.7%) and manufacturers (61.5%) said that they are more likely to be embroiled in patent disputes than other types of companies.
In particular, manufacturers of parts, such as displays, semiconductors and sensors, reckoned that they will be more hounded by patent disputes than producers of finished goods.
Lim Ho-gi, the head of the Patent Support Center said, “A red flag has been raised for the Korean electronics industry, since 40% of the surveyed parts suppliers forecast that disputes over their patents will erupt down the road.”
Besides, a mere 5.7% of the surveyed Korean companies said the outcome of possible patent lawsuits will end up in favor of Korean companies.

"글로벌 특허전쟁 부품업체에 직격탄”
전자•IT 기업 10곳 중 6곳 이상은 삼성•애플 간 특허 전쟁 이후 글로벌 특허 분쟁이 더욱 격해질 것이라고 예측했다. 특히 전자부품 제조업체의 피해가 클 것이라는 지적이다. 전자정보통신산업진흥회 특허지원센터는 “지난해보다 글로벌 특허 분쟁이 더욱 심해질 것이라고 전망하는 전자•IT 기업이 62%로 조사됐다”고 밝혔다. `진정될 것`이라고 응답한 기업은 30.7%였다.
특허지원센터 조사 결과 소프트웨어(SW)•서비스업 관련 기업과 제조 기업이 다른 사업 분야 보다 특허 분쟁 가능성이 높을 것이라고 전망했다. SW•서비스업(65.7%), 제조업(61.5%)은 유통판매업(41.7%)보다 특허 분쟁이 `더욱 격화될 것`이라고 응답한 비중이 높았다.
문제는 부품 제조업체다. 제조업 가운데 디스플레이•반도체•센서 등 전자 부품업체는 분쟁이 완제품에 비해 심해진다고 평가했다. 임호기 특허지원센터장은 “부품기업의 40%는 자사가 보유한 특허에 관련해 앞으로 분쟁이 발생한다고 예측해 전자산업 전반에 적색 신호가 들어왔다”고 설명했다.
분쟁 마무리도 국내업체에 상당히 비관적이라고 내다봤다. 스마트폰을 중심으로 국내 기업과 해외 기업 특허 전쟁이 `양측에 일방적이지 않게 마무리될 것`이라는 예측이 절반(52.1%)을 차지했지만 `해외 기업에 유리하게 전개될 것`이라고 응답한 기업이 42.2%에 이르렀다. 우리 기업에 유리한 방향으로 응답한 비율은 5.7%에 불과했다. 임 센터장은 “완제품 기업에 비해 부품기업이 스마트폰 등 전자•IT 산업의 특허 분쟁이 해외 기업에 유리하게 전개될 것이라고 생각하고 있다”며 “적극적인 대처 없이는 전자•IT 기업 경쟁력 저하가 우려돼 대응전략이 절실한 상황”이라고 밝혔다.
설문조사는 특허지원센터가 지난해 11월부터 올해 2월까지 전자•IT 기업 특허 분쟁 전망 실태 파악과 대응책을 마련하고자 384개 기업을 대상으로 실시했다.
