SEOUL, KOREA– South Korea's military will introduce a domestically developed DBMS (Database Management System) to the weapons system of war vessels, the first in military history. The adoption of Korean-made software will further expand to mobile weapons systems like unmanned aircraft and tanks.
The Korean military will apply an in-memory DBMS, developed by RealtimeTech Co. (a Korean developer of DBMS software), to its ongoing KRW 10 billion project to build a warship weapons system.
RealtimeTech’s Kairos in-memory DBMS will be used to support warship weapons systems’ distributed surroundings in real time. Being embedded in a platform, the Kairos in-memory DBMS will interlock with VX Works (US company Wind River’s real-time operating system (RTOS)). Foreign-made DBMSs, such as Oracle and Microsoft’s DBMSs, have been mainly put to use.
The adoption of RealtimeTech’s Kairos in-memory DBMS is anticipated to expand to aircraft and mobile equipment. RealtimeTech also took part in the defense RTOS development project, a part of the Ministry of knowledge and Economy’s WBS (World Best Project) Project.
Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) is consulting with relevant institutions to follow through with the application of defense RTOSs developed under the WBS Project to Korea’s weapons systems.
Once the application of Korea-made DBMSs to weapons systems picks up, exports of Korea-made DBMSs is likely to gain traction.

국방 무기체계 첫 국산 DBMS 적용
군이 함정무기 체계에 적용하는 데이터베이스관리시스템(DBMS)으로 처음 국산을 쓴다. 국산 적용은 앞으로 무인항공기와 전차 등 이동무기 체계에도 확대될 전망이다.
7일 관련 업계에 따르면 군은 100억원을 투입해 개발 중인 함정무기 체계에 중소 전문기업인 리얼타임테크의 인메모리 기반 DBMS를 적용한다. LIG넥스원이 개발하는 함정무기 체계는 수상함과 잠수함에서 전장의 모든 정보를 수집•식별•분석해 사격•발사•평가에 적용하는 것으로 전투효과를 극대화하는 육지 기반 테스트 시스템(LBTS)이다.
리얼타임테크의 `카이로스 인메모리 DBMS`는 함정무기 체계의 실시간 분산환경 지원에 쓰인다. 플랫폼에 임베디드 형태로 탑재해 미국 윈드리버의 실시간 운용체계(RTOS)인 `VX웍스`와 연동한다. 지금까지 오라클•MS 등 외산 DBMS를 주로 사용했다.
카이로스 인메모리 DBMS는 항공기와 이동장비에도 확대 적용될 것으로 기대됐다. 리얼타임테크는 지식경제부 월드베스트소프트웨어(WBS) 사업으로 진행하는 국산 국방 RTOS 개발에도 참여했다. 국산 국방 RTOS가 실제 무기체계에 적용되면 국산 인메모리 기반 DBMS 기반으로 운영될 가능성이 높다. 방위사업청은 WBS 사업으로 개발하는 국방 RTOS에 대한 무기체계 적용을 구체화하기 위해 관련 기관과 협의 중이다.
향후 무기체계에 국산 DBMS 적용이 늘어나면 수출도 확대될 전망이다. 국산 기술로 무기체계를 개발해도 내장 SW가 외산이어서 수익성이 낮거나 라이선스 문제로 수출을 하지 못한 예가 있다. 외산 SW 사용에 따른 라이선스 등 유지보수 비용도 상당 규모 절감될 수 있다. 진성일 리얼타임테크 대표는 “무기체계 SW 중 DBMS 등 시스템 플랫폼 기술은 여전히 외산에 의존한다”며 “함정무기 체계 시스템 SW의 국산화로 다양한 무기체계에 국산 DBMS가 적용될 수 있도록 노력하겠다”고 말했다.
