Seoul, Korea - Global material and parts companies are entering into Energy Storage System (ESS) market one after the other, with the anticipation of significant market growth accompanied by the growth of hybrid and electric cars and by the increasing performances of electronic devices.
The industry sources say that global players such as Corning and Parker Hannifin, have set their eyes on ESS as the next-generation growth engine and expediting R&D thereof.
The glass and ceramic company, Corning is developing the ultra capacitor that can store high-volume electricity in a short time. The company was able to develop a pilot product using a special carbon material.
Parker Hannifin has developed an ESS used by renewable energy generation plants. Its ESS is comprised of controller and storage systems connected to the container filled with lithium batteries provided by Samsung SDI, LG Chem and Mitsubishi.
Korean companies including Samsung SDI, LG Chem, LSIS and Hyosung are also actively seeking opportunities in this market. Samsung SDI and LGIS have set presences in Japanese and the U.S. markets, and LG Chem is tapping into Chinese market.
Alongside the global growth of demand for electricity, the ESS market is also expected to grow at a pace of 35% per year, reaching KRW 17.8 by 2020.

글로벌 소재•부품 기업들이 에너지저장장치(ESS) 시장에 속속 진출하고 있다. 모바일 기기 등 전자 제품이 점점 고성능화 되고 하이브리드•전기차 수요가 대폭 늘면서 ESS 역시 시장 규모가 대폭 커질 것으로 점쳐지기 때문이다.
10일 업계에 따르면 코닝•파카하니핀 등 글로벌 기업들이 ESS를 차세대 성장동력으로 삼고 연구개발(R&D)에 박차를 가하고 있다.
유리•세라믹 전문회사 코닝은 `울트라 캐패시터` 프로젝트를 진행 중이다. 최근 시제품 개발에 성공했다. 고용량 전기를 단시간에 충전할 수 있는 시스템이다. 자동차에 장착하면 차가 가다서다를 반복할 때 기존 배터리를 쓰지 않고 이 장치에 저장된 전기를 쓰는 형태다. 연비를 줄이고 기존 배터리로는 부족한 용량을 채울 수 있다. 전기는 브레이크를 밟는 등 동작을 할 때 차에서 포집한다. 특수 탄소 소재가 쓰였다. 전동 드릴 등 단기 충전이 필요한 휴대용 기기로도 시장을 넓힐 계획이다.
파카하니핀은 태양광•풍력발전 등 신재생에너지 발전소에서 쓰이는 ESS를 개발했다. 삼성SDI•LG화학•미쓰비시 등 배터리 회사와 손잡고 리튬이온 배터리를 구입해 컨테이너에 넣고 컨트롤러와 저장장치를 만드는 방식이다. 심야전기 등을 저장해 원할 때 사용할 수 있게 해준다. 미국•남미 일부 지역에 설치했다.
국내 삼성SDI, LG화학, LS산전, 효성 등 국내 대기업 역시 이 시장을 적극 공략하고 있다. 삼성SDI와 LS산전은 일본•미국 시장에, LG화학은 중국 시장 선점을 노리고 있다.
각 회사들은 세계 전력 수요가 급팽창할 것으로 내다보고 있다. 전력 수요는 앞으로 20년간 연평균 3%씩 성장할 전망이다. ESS 시장 역시 매년 35%씩 증가해 2020년에는 약 17조8000억원에 달할 것으로 예상된다.
코닝 관계자는 “ESS 시장은 아직 초기 단계로, 앞으로 폭발적인 성장이 예상된다”고 말했다.
