Seoul, Korea - LG landed on the global 3rd position for the first time since it started to make smartphones.
According to Strategy Analytics, a market survey firm, LG Electronics marked 3.2% market share in sales in the fourth quarter last year.
The survey found that LG ranked in the third past HTC (2.9%), Sony (2.8%) and Blackberry (2.3%), making a big leap from the 8th place from the year before.
Apple was ranked in the 1st place with 42.7% market share, followed by Samsung Electronics (28.7%). The chasm between leading group and following LG was still deep, but LG’s performance was strong enough to draw the market’s attention.
LG was behind some Chinese handset makers in number of units sold, but its sale in terms of dollars owing to the successful sales of Optimus G and L series.
HC Soh, an analyst from Shinhan Investment commented, “LG failed to go beyond 5% in global smartphone market share for the last two years, but it will be able to break that mark this year and take a firm position as the global 3rd.”

LG전자는 HTC(2.9%), 소니(2.8%), 블랙베리(2.3%) 등을 제치고 3위를 기록했다. 전년 동기 8위에서 1년만에 3위로 껑충 뛰어올랐다.
4분기 매출액 1위는 애플(42.7%)이었으며 2위는 삼성전자(28.7%)로 LG전자는 여전히 이들과 격차가 크지만 3위권 내에서 가장 눈에 띄는 성과를 보였다.
LG전자가 판매량 순위에서는 일부 중국 기업에 뒤지지만 매출액 순위가 높은 것은 옵티머스G 를 비롯해 옵티머스L 시리즈 등 판매가 늘었기 때문이다. 중국 기업들은 저가 단말기로 물량 공세를 퍼붓고 있다.
소현철 신한금융투자 연구원은 “지난 2년간 LG전자 스마트폰 시장점유율은 5%를 넘지 못했다”며 “올해는 5%를 넘어서며 3위 업체로 위상을 회복할 것”이라고 전망했다.
