Seoul, Korea - SK Telecom is promoting a patent pool for the next generation video CODEC together with MPEG LA, a licensing agency, to secure the patents for its future technologies.
Global companies are rushing to secure patents on the next generation video CODEC, and Korean companies are also investing resources on the R&D to keep up. SK had led the formation of LTE and WCDMA patent pool, which allowed the company to enjoy a stable royalty income from its patents and to use the pooled patents at a relative lower cost.
With regards to the patents on next generation video CODEC, SK Telecom had been conducting joint R&D with Korean universities since 2008 and submitted about 130 international patent applications
SK Telecom had proclaimed that it will focus on healthcare, B2B solution and wired/wireless IPTV service as its future growth engines, and plans to apply the patents secured through the patent pool to the IPTV service. The company already completed the development of core technology essential to High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) last year. HEVC has a higher video compression efficiency that can double the transmission speed of HD and Ultra HD video through internet and mobile networks.
Considering the size of annual royalty for MPEG-2 being somewhere about USD 4 billion, SK’s royalty income from its HEVC patent may be in hundreds of million dollars over 10 year period, when it is accepted as the industry standard.

SK텔레콤이 미래 기술 특허 확보에 돌입했다. SK텔레콤은 라이센싱대행사인 MPEG LA(Lisence Administrator)와 `차세대 비디오 코덱` 특허풀 결성을 추진 중인 것으로 확인됐다. 차세대 비디오 코덱은 스마트폰과 콘텐츠 유통 활성화에 따라 급성장하는 멀티미디어 시장에서 필수 요소다.
글로벌 기업은 차세대 비디오 코덱에 관련된 특허를 앞다투어 확보하고 국내 기업도 관련 특허 확보를 위한 연구개발(R&D)에 집중하고 있는 상황이다. SK텔레콤 행보는 기존 네트워크(NW)에 이어 차세대 성장기술 분야로 특허 경쟁력 확대를 위한 것으로 풀이된다. SK는 그동안 LTE와 WCDMA 특허풀 결성을 주도, 보유 특허를 활용해 안정적인 로열티 수익을 확보했다. 동시에 자체적으로 확보가 어려운 특허를 저렴하게 이용하고 있다.
SK텔레콤 관계자는 “차세대 비디오 코텍 특허풀 추진은 기존 특허풀의 성과와 미래 기술에 대한 특허 확보 필요성 등 다각적인 배경에서 시작했다”고 소개했다. 차세대 비디오 코덱 특허와 관련해 SK텔레콤은 2008년부터 국내 대학과 공동 연구개발을 통해 관련 핵심 특허를 확보하고, 130여건의 국제특허를 출원한 바 있다.
헬스케어•B2B솔루션과 유무선 IPTV를 3대 성장동력으로 선정한 SK텔레콤은 `차세대 비디오 코덱` 특허풀을 통해 확보된 특허를 `유무선 IPTV` 사업에 적용할 예정이다. 또 지난해 차세대 비디오 압축기술인 HEVC(High Efficiency Video Coding)의 핵심 원천 기술 개발도 완료했다. 이 기술은 동영상의 압축효율을 높여 HD및 울트라HD(HD영상 4배 품질) 인터넷 및 모바일 NW를 통한 전송 속도를 2배까지 높일 수 있다.
대표 비디오 코덱 특허인 MPEG-2 디지털 비디오 압축 기술의 로열티 규모가 연간 40억달러 수준이라는 점을 감안하면, SK텔레콤이 개발한 HEVC 표준화가 완료되면 이후 10년간 수 천억원의 특허 로열티 수익이 예상된다.
한편 차세대 비디오코덱 외에 SK텔레콤은 MS, 인텔, 애플 등 글로벌 기업과 와이파이(WiFi) 특허풀 결성을 추진 중으로, 연내 특허풀 결성이 일단락될 것으로 내다봤다.
