SEOUL, KOREA – According to Financial Times, after Apple and Samsung Electronics, Google and LG Electronics are now working on a smart watch of their own.
Financial Times reported that Google’s android team, which takes charge of the development of smart phones and smart pads, might be in charge of the development of a smart watch. Google seems to work on an Android-based smart watch that will serve as an annex to a smart phone.
Google had applied for a smart watch patent in 2011. According to the new patent, Google might be working on a dual screen watch, which will have the primary display up front, and another secondary display hidden under the first screen.
Yet, Google declined to comment on any plans for smart watches.
TechCrunch (a web publication that offers technology news and analysis) also posted a news article titled “LG is also said to be building a smart watch and Google Glass competitor, as is everyone.”
LG, which had attempted to sell the LG-GD910 watch phone in 2009, is reportedly also working on its next-generation smart watch with connections to mobile devices.
Newspapers predicted that major mobile manufacturers will competitively jump on the smart watch bandwagon.

'스마트 워치' 가 대세…구글•LG도 개발 중
애플•삼성전자에 이어 구글과 LG전자도 스마트워치를 개발하고 있는 것으로 나타났다.
파이낸셜타임스(FT)는 구글이 스마트 손목시계를 개발하고 있다고 25일 보도했다.
보도에 따르면 구글 스마트워치 개발은 스마트폰•스마트패드 개발을 맡고 있는 구글 내 안드로이드 부문이 담당하고 있다. 안드로이드 운영체계(OS)를 기반으로 스마트폰의 확장된 기능을 수행할 수 있도록 개발되고 있다. 삼성전자 등이 개발하는 것과는 별개의 제품이라고도 부연했다.
구글은 앞서 지난 2011년 `손으로 뚜껑을 열 수 있는 듀얼 스크린 디스플레이`를 장착하고 촉각 기반의 사용자 환경과 카메라가 탑재된 스마트워치 관련 특허를 낸 바 있다.
구글은 이에 대해 공식적으로 확인하지 않았다.
테크크런치는 LG전자도 스마트워치를 개발하고 있다고 보도했다. 지난 2009년 GD910 판매를 시도한 데 이어 차세대 제품이 연구개발 단계로 모바일 기기와 결합된 방향으로 개발될 것으로 예측됐다.
삼성전자가 최근 스마트워치 개발을 확인한 데 이어 주요 모바일 제조 기업이 스마트워치 개발에 앞다퉈 뛰어들 것이라고 외신들은 내다봤다.
