SEOUL, KOREA – Displaybank, a Seoul-based market research and consulting firm, predicted that the global LCD polarizing plate market would grow on average 6% annually to hit USD 14 billion 2016.
It turned out that the global LCD polarizing plate market last year gained 9% year-on-year to USD 11.2 billion, 77% (or USD 8.6 billion) of which was taken up by polarizing plates for large LCDs.
The market for large LCD polarizing plates (e.g. TVs, monitors and laptop computer) is forecast to grow on average 4% annually to reach USD 9.9 billion in 2016. Yet, large LCD polarizing plates’ share of the total polarizing plate market is likely to decline to 71% owing to growing demand for small-sized devices like smart phones.
In terms of market share, the global LCD polarizing plate market has been led by Japan’s Nitto Denko, followed by LG Chem and Sumitomo. In the market for polarizing plates for LCD TVs, Nitto Denko ranks first with a 33% share, followed by Sumitomo (28%) and LG Chem (27%).

시장조사 업체 디스플레이뱅크는 LCD 편광판 시장이 2016년까지 연평균 6% 성장을 보이면서 140억 달러 규모에 달할 것으로 28일 전망했다.
지난 해 편광판 시장은 전년 대비 9% 증가한 112억 달러로 집계됐다. 이 중 대형 LCD용 편광판이 86억달러(77%)를 차지한 것으로 나타났다. TV•모니터•노트북 등 대형 LCD용 편광판 시장은 2016년까지 연평균 4% 성장률을 보이며 99억 달러 규모로 커질 것으로 예상됐다. 규모는 커지지만, 스마트폰 등 소형 기기 수요 증가로 인해 전체 시장에서의 점유율은 71%로 떨어질 전망이다.
편광판 시장 업체별 점유율은 니토덴코가 1위, LG화학이 2위, 그리고 스미토모가 3위인 것으로 나타났다. LCD TV용 편광판 시장에서는 니토덴코가 33%, 스미토모가 28%, LG화학이 27% 등으로 비슷한 점유율을 보였다. 박형 수요가 가장 많은 노트북용 편광판 시장 점유율의 경우 스미토모가 53%로 1위, 제일모직과 니토덴코가 각각 14%씩 점유한 것으로 집계됐다.
지난 해 편광판 시장에서는 트리아세틸셀룰로스(TAC) 대체 필름이 가장 큰 화두였다. TAC 대체 필름으로 올 해 아크릴이 6%, COP(Cyclic Olefin Polymer)가 약 7%, 폴리에틸렌(PET) 등 기타 필름이 1% 미만 정도를 기록할 것으로 예상된다. 2016년에는 아크릴만 전체의 18%정도를 점유할 것으로 전망된다.
