SEOUL, KOREA – Korea’s multipurpose Satellite “Arirang-3″ has ventured into the global satellite imagery market. Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) said Friday it has embarked on the commercial provision of satellite images taken from Arirang-3, which was launched in May of last year.
Satellite images taken from Arirang-3 come with a resolution of 70 cm (about two feet). Domestic and international sale of images taken from Arirang-3 will be handled by Satrec Initiative (SI), one of the world leading companies in high performance Earth observation small satellite solutions.
The global satellite imagery market is expected to reach USD 1.5 billion this year. The KARI predicted that the market would grow to USD 2.7 billion by 2018.
Arirang-2, launched in 2006, has been utilized for national land management and public safety, etc. Korea notched up deals (worth USD 22 million) to sell satellite data to the United Arab Emirates, the European Space Agency (ESA) and Taiwan in direct reception mode.

아리랑 3호, 위성영상 상용화 시작
아리랑위성 3호가 세계 위성영상 시장에 진출한다. 고해상도 위성 판매로 수익을 확보하고 세계 시장 점유율을 높일 계획이다.
한국항공우주연구원(원장 김승조)은 아리랑 3호 영상자료를 세계 공공과 상용 보급을 29일부터 착수한다고 밝혔다. 아리랑 3호는 지난해 5월 발사해 10개월간 성능검증과 영상품질 검•보정 작업을 완료했다.
아리랑 3호 영상자료는 해상도 70㎝급 영상이다. 사용 목적에 따라 비영리•공공•학술 분야는 항우연이 직접 보급하고 국내외 상용판매는 위성영상 판매 대행사 쎄트렉아이가 주관한다. 지오씨엔아이•가이아3D•인디웨어•목스녹스 등 국내 기업과 미국 디지털글로브, 유럽 이지오스•케이샛이 협력사로 포함된 컨소시엄을 통해 협력사 보유 기술과 인프라를 활용, 세계에 보급한다.
올해 세계 위성영상 시장 규모는 15억달러로 예상된다. 항우연은 2018년에는 27억달러 시장이 형성될 것으로 예측했다.
지난 2006년 발사된 아리랑 2호는 국토관리•공공안전 분야에 활용되고 있다. 국가안보 분야와 공공기관 무상보급으로 2800억원의 수입 대체효과를 달성했다. 아랍에미레이트, 유럽우주청, 대만 등에 2200만달러 상당 직수신 판매 계약과 28억원 개별 영상판매 실적을 올렸다.
항우연은 UN 산하 국제 재해재난 대응기구인 `인터내셔널 차터`를 통해 국제적인 재해재난 탐지와 피해 분석 등 인도주의적 차원에서 위성정보 활용 등 국제사회 지원을 지속적으로 확대할 계획이다.
