Seoul, Korea - As the demand for secondary battery for smart devices and electric cars has sharply increased recently, Korean battery material companies are speeding up their efforts to come with the next-generation negative polar substance.

According to the industry on the 31st, major Korean battery material companies have started the development of silicon negative polar substance. The substance is a core material for the secondary batteries that stores and discharges the ions from positive polar substance and channels the electric current to the external circuit.

Currently, the lithium-ion battery which dominates the secondary battery market uses carbon as the negative polar substance, because its production cost is low and size can be adjusted according to the product it is used for. However, the Korean battery makers depend on the carbon imported from China or Japan. An industry insider explains, “the Korean-made negative polar substance is much more expensive than the imports – its in the market is less than 10%.”

The new material expected to replace carbon is silicon. The effective capacity per 1 gram of silicon negative polar substance is about 1,000mA, which is about three times greater than that of the carbon-made negative polar substance. The silicon is safer than the carbon, for it has a higher melting temperature and is stronger against the physical impact. However, some improvements are still to be made to make is size smaller and slow down its speed of natural discharge.
